CCRS is delighted to announce a new strategic partnership with the U.S. National Science Foundation National Center for Atmospheric Research (NSF NCAR), based in Boulder, Colorado. Under the new partnership, CCRS and NSF NCAR scientists will undertake joint R&D in tropical weather/climate science, and the development and application of a next-generation (‘SINGV_NG’) weather/climate modelling system optimised for tropical and urban environments. NSF NCAR is a world-leading atmospheric science research centre managed by UCAR - The University Corporation for Atmospheric Research, providing both scientific expertise and “enablers” (models, observations, supercomputing, testbeds, tutorials, etc.) to support a large range of national and international weather/climate research activities. Through a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) recently signed between the National Environment Agency and NSF NCAR, joint R&D efforts between CCRS and NSF NCAR will initially focus on exploring the use of NSF NCAR's Model for Prediction Across Scales (MPAS) at km-scale resolution in the deep tropics. The initial ‘SINGV_NG(MPAS)’ project includes the following goals: 🌏 Accelerated R&D of key data assimilation capabilities suitable for the deep tropics, such as the use of cloud-affected “all-sky” hyperspectral satellite radiance observations, leveraging capabilities developed by UCAR’s Joint Center for Satellite Data Assimilation (JCSDA) 🌏 A novel, stretched-grid application of MPAS for Southeast Asia (SEA) suitable for fine-scale (100–300m) weather prediction in the Singapore region 🌏 Enhanced understanding of physical processes that are crucial for tropical weather prediction and climate projection Beyond the initial project, common areas of R&D interest include the use of artificial intelligence within tropical weather/climate applications, aviation weather impacts, regional climate projections, and the development and evaluation of a high-resolution regional coupled ocean-atmosphere modelling system, leveraging CCRS’ expertise in coupled and urban modelling. This milestone builds on CCRS' existing international multilateral collaborations as a core member of the Momentum Partnership, and bilateral partnerships with the UK Met Office and the Australian Bureau of Meteorology. The MOU with NSF NCAR further strengthens CCRS’ commitment to global partnerships to advance weather and climate modelling R&D in the SEA region. We look forward to the exciting possibilities brought by this MOU and its potential impact on enhancing CCRS’ weather and climate capabilities to meet stakeholder needs. We were honoured to welcome IPCC Chair Prof Jim Skea for a meaningful and engaging visit yesterday. The session included: 🌏 An introduction to CCRS' research and capabilities 🌏 Insights into climate change projections for Singapore and the Southeast Asia region 🌏 An overview of CCRS’ initiatives to advance climate change impact research 🌏 A rich discussion on topics such as science-policy translation and climate modelling The visit concluded with a tour of CCRS' in-house supercomputer ‘Utama’ and the co-located Upper Air Observatory of the Meteorological Service Singapore. This engagement marked an excellent opportunity for CCRS to exchange insights with Prof Skea and to reaffirm our commitment to advancing climate science and contributing to the IPCC’s work in assessing the scientific basis of climate change, its impacts and future risks. #ClimateChange #ClimateImpact #ClimateResearch #ClimateProjection #IPCC

It’s been a year since our operational ‘SINGV-DA’ numerical weather prediction (NWP) system upgrade went live, with a host of science upgrades such as improved representation of clouds and assimilation of Himawari-9 satellite observations. After a full year of performance monitoring, we are glad to share that the upgrade has brought much-improved skill for: 🌏 Light and heavy rainfall forecasts over the whole SINGV-DA domain 🌏 Wind forecasts over Singapore With improved prediction of heavy rainfall, SINGV-DA can now better support forecasts of extreme rainfall events to inform decision-making. Swipe to find out more about the upgrade and improvements made. A big thank you to the Momentum Partnership for the fruitful discussions, collaborative development and rigorous testing of our new model science configuration. CCRS recently had the pleasure of hosting Dr KRITANAI TORSRI and Mr Pattarapoom Peangta from Thailand's Hydro – Informatics Institute (HII) under the ASEAN Specialised Meteorological Centre (ASMC) Attachment Programme. The focus area of the one-month visit was the potential for regional coupled (atmosphere-land-ocean-wave) modelling to support operational numerical weather prediction (NWP). Find out more about the collaborative work between CCRS and HII scientists under the ASMC Attachment Programme. #NumericalWeatherPrediction #NWP #ASMC #ASEAN #WeatherModelling #ClimateModelling #ResearchAttachment

We had the honour of hosting esteemed experts from the IPCC Task Group on Data Support for Climate Change Assessments (TG-Data), including Co-Chairs Dr David Huard and Dr Sebastian Vicuna. TG-Data plays a key role in ensuring that data produced in the IPCC Assessments is usable by the wider scientific community. This visit facilitated invaluable exchange on critical topics such as climate change projections, data quality and the importance of data sharing for informed decision-making. CCRS shared about its projections and impacts work that helps facilitate a climate-resilient future, such as the Third National Climate Change Study (V3). Aligning with TG-Data's recommendations and international standards, CCRS is committed to ensuring the accessibility and usability of weather and climate data, such as the V3 dataset. #ClimateChange #ClimateScience #IPCC #ClimateData #WeatherData #DataSharing #V3 #ClimateChangeSG

We're proud to be part of the official launch of the National Supercomputing Centre (NSCC) Singapore 's new supercomputers, ASPIRE 2A and ASPIRE 2A+. These state-of-the-art supercomputing systems will significantly boost Singapore's research capabilities in various fields, including climate science. Our Director Prof Dale Barker gave a keynote presentation to share how Singapore’s Third National Climate Change Study (V3) utilised supercomputing resources, including ASPIRE 2A, to run climate simulations to provide high-resolution localised climate data for Singapore and the region. CCRS scientist Dr Sandeep Sahany showcased our work on V3 through a poster presentation. CCRS is excited to continue leveraging these powerful computing resources to advance our R&D works. We were pleased to welcome Cambridge CARES Director Prof Markus Kraft, who delivered a talk on The World Avatar (TWA) project, a collaboration between CARES, CCRS and the Earth Observatory of Singapore. Read on to learn more about TWA. #SeaLevel #SeaLevelRise #ClimateResearch #ClimateImpact #V3 #ClimateChangeSG
Can Singapore prepare for various sea level rise scenarios if we have the tools to plan ahead? #CambridgeCARES Director Prof Markus Kraft presented The World Avatar (TWA) project to the Centre for Climate Research Singapore. TWA is a dynamic knowledge graph developed at CARES that can be scaled beyond a single area to various use cases. For this presentation, Prof Kraft focused on using TWA for vulnerability assessments of #sea #level rise in Singapore and its broader impacts on urban elements such as land plots, buildings, population, cultural sites, road networks, etc. TWA’s methodology and findings have recently been published (Applied Sciences MDPI) in a paper with CCRS and the Earth Observatory of Singapore: https://lnkd.in/gcDZUg2q We are grateful that our base in Singapore has enabled us to collaborate with local agencies on topical issues relevant to the tropical and Southeast Asian region. #climatechange #CMCL #TheWorldAvatar #CoMo #NEA #CCRS #CREATE #NRF
