Open science accelerates breakthroughs and prevents misinformation. 🌍 NASA's TOPS program just showed me how. This approach could revolutionize your field too! I've just earned my badge from #NASA's Transform to Open Science (TOPS) initiative, and one striking example from the session really drove home the power of open science: In 1990, satellite data analysis suggested global cooling in the upper atmosphere, leading some to question the reality of global warming. However, because the data and analysis methods weren't openly shared, it took an #eight-year delay until 1998 for other researchers to discover a critical error in the original analysis. The original researchers hadn't accounted for orbital decay and other effects, which had led to a falsely perceived cooling trend. Open science practices could have prevented this delay and misinformation spread. 🛡️ Imagine applying these principles to your research. How much faster could we solve critical problems? Recent observations from NASA’s IRIS satellite have provided compelling evidence supporting a long-standing theory regarding the creation of solar flares. This phenomenon, known as "slip-running" reconnection, involves the rapid shifting of magnetic field lines in the sun’s atmosphere at astonishing speeds of up to 2,600 km/s. This discovery aligns with predictions made nearly two decades ago, enhancing our understanding of solar dynamics.The slip-running reconnection process is crucial for explaining the mechanisms behind solar flares and coronal mass ejections, which can have significant effects on space weather and Earth's atmosphere. The findings were presented at the 17th European Solar Physics Meeting (ESPM-17), highlighting the importance of multi-scale energy release during solar events.This breakthrough not only validates previous models but also opens new avenues for research into the complex interactions of solar magnetic fields, potentially leading to improved forecasting of solar activity and its impacts on our planet. https://lnkd.in/eXRn3mg6

Oregon State University researchers are partnering with NASA on a $525,000 NSF project to study how gravity affects microbial biofilms. They will send samples to the International Space Station in 2025 to isolate the role of capillarity, a force driving liquid movement in porous media, by eliminating gravity's influence. This research has applications in groundwater remediation, water treatment, agriculture, and space exploration. Biofilms will be 3D scanned upon return to compare growth in microgravity versus Earth.
