2024 Shari Travel Guide: Must-see attractions, popular food, hotels, transportation routes (updated in December)
Today's Weather
Partly cloudy -4--2℃
Popular Attractions
Shiretoko Peninsula
Stop saying you're tired of Hokkaido! There are so many things to do in Eastern Hokkaido!
Eastern Hokkaido is the essence of Hokkaido tourism. The roads are bad and public transportation is inconvenient in winter, but this means that the beautiful scenery is preserved due to the lack of tourists.
It gets dark in Hokkaido at around 4 pm, so keep this in mind when planning your itinerary. I like natural scenery and cultural attractions, so if you're tired of the classic routes, don't miss the advanced routes in Hokkaido from February to March.
Hoshino Resorts: Hoshino TOMAMU Resort is the largest ski resort in Hokkaido. The powder snow is picturesque, and the 20+ ski runs will satisfy your skiing dreams. There are also exciting snow activities to enjoy the charm of ice and snow.
Shiretoko Hiking: Walk on the Shiretoko Peninsula and admire the magnificent drift ice. The Shiretoko Five Lakes or drift ice walks are both fascinating. Cross the snow to find traces of animals, and you may encounter foxes or deer, leaving unforgettable memories of nature.
Abashiri Icebreaker: Don't miss the winter-only Abashiri icebreaker tour. Feel the shock of nature in the icy sea, and you may encounter manatees, seals, and more, adding a mysterious touch to your journey.
Sapporo White Illumination: From November 22, 2024 to March 14, 2025, the Sapporo White Illumination Festival will be held at the same time as the German Christmas Market. The light show and food will bring a festive atmosphere and surprises.
Lake Akan Winter Carnival: From early February to early March, the Lake Akan Ice Park offers ice fishing, ice skating, snowmobiles, and more. It's lively and fun.
Itinerary Recommendations:
- Day 1: New Chitose Airport - Tanukikoji Shopping Street - Sapporo White Illumination.
- Day 2: Biei Popular Tree Tour - Asahiyama Zoo - Sounkyo Ice Waterfall Festival (January 25 to March 9) - Sounkyo Onsen.
- Day 3: Kitami Fox Village - Abashiri Icebreaker - Abashiri Prison Museum.
- Day 4: Shiretoko Hiking (various routes available).
- Day 5: Bihoro Pass - Lake Kussharo - Lake Mashu - Lake Akan Winter Carnival (early February to early March).
- Day 6: Akanko Ainu Kotan - Hoshino Resorts - Ice Platform - Ice Village.
Hokkaido Higashi self-driving tour, 8 days and 7 nights itinerary attraction sharing
#自车游 #100 ways to travel
Hokkaido is vast and sparsely populated, especially in the Dodong area, but it has excellent natural landforms. If you want to visit #HokkaidoDodong, the best way is #self-driving tour. In fact, driving in Hokkaido is very comfortable. There are few people and cars, the roads are easy to walk, and the Japanese are very disciplined, so just drive slowly.
This 7-day and 6-night self-driving tour to the east of Hokkaido, the itinerary is as follows: New Chitose Airport-Obihiro-Kushiro-Shiretoko-Abashiri-Sapporo
✓Transportation strategy: I drove the whole trip by myself. Because there were 5 adults and a lot of luggage, I rented a 7-seater 2000cc SUV Serena, which cost about NT$4,000 per day. Because of the long distance between Daodong and Daodong, if you take the train, you can only schedule 1-2 scenic spots every day. It is more flexible to drive and you can stop when you see good scenery on the way.
✓Must-visit attractions:
#道东三湖 are respectively #Akan湖 #Mashu Lake #Kussharo Lake. This time I only went to the first two and stayed at the Akan Lake Hot Spring Hotel for one night. Lake Akan is famous for its aboriginal culture and green algae, as well as hot springs to soak in and shopping streets to visit; Lake Mashu is a crater lake, the most transparent lake in Japan, with a blue color, and the mouth of the lake is surrounded by cliffs. Can see from a distance.
#Shiretoko Mountains #Shiretoko Five Lakes The most famous scenic spot on the Shiretoko Peninsula is one of the eight scenic spots in Shiretoko. It is early spring when you visit, and the snow on the top of the mountain has not yet melted, making it a beautiful place to take pictures. The Shiretoko Five Lakes is a famous hiking route, and next to it is the Jawhotsk Sea, which is the habitat of wild black bears. You must be very careful when hiking.
#Abashiri Drift Ice Museum In fact, the most famous experience in Abashiri is to take a ride on the ice bed to watch the drift ice. Unfortunately, the season is wrong, so we can only visit the Drift Ice Museum to get addicted and experience the feeling of freezing below zero. There is also an attraction nearby, #Abashiri Prison, which has been turned into a museum.
#东amokoto Shibazakura Park# The Takigawa Rapeseed Flower Festival is a spring flower viewing spot in Hokkaido. One is the pink carpet of Shibazakura covering the hills, dreamy and magnificent, and the other is the yellow rapeseed flower field. Both places are beautiful and worth a stop. . Departing from Amidashi, we will first arrive at Higashimokoto, and after viewing the Shibazakura, we will go to Takigawa, and then drive to Sapporo.
✓Recommended hotels: Hokkaido is very famous for its hot springs. You can choose to stay in several special hot spring hotels, such as #Akan游久の里紻雅 in the Akan Lake Hot Spring Area, or #北殷巷hirotokohotel in the Shiretoko Peninsula, where you can soak in hot springs and eat Kaiseki Japanese food, very enjoyable!
✓Must-eat food: The only thing you must eat when visiting Hokkaido is seafood! Whether it is a seafood restaurant in Kushiro Fishing Port or a buffet in a hot spring hotel, there must be fresh sashimi and salmon roe. You can DIY a bowl of sashimi donburi yourself. Obihiro is also famous for its pork, and the charcoal-grilled pork donburi is a must-try. There is also Hokkaido fresh milk produced in Tokachi. It is thick, pure, fragrant and cheap. You can drink it for breakfast every day.
✓Shopping Guide: If you want to shop for souvenirs, of course you have to go back to the metropolis Sapporo. The most famous Tanukikoji Shopping Street has everything you need, from drugstores to souvenirs, and there are many delicious restaurants along the way. In addition, Daimaru Department Store in Sapporo also has a fantastic product called Snow White Cheese, which is more popular than NY Cheese in Tokyo. Don’t miss it and queue up before it opens!
#HOkkaidoTravel #self-driving tour #itinerary sharing #100 ways to travel
A well managed forest and lake section of the Shiretoko National Park. Managed parking for 500 yen, sign in for the hour long wander around the lakes area on well defined path.
First up is a good ranger talk, mandatory, about bears and sightings and what to do and not to do. Good English language version.
Had rained overnight, so plenty of opportunity to get mud on your boots for an authentic look of a forest tramp.
Lakes are scenic, and the final portion of the track is a raised boardwalk. This had electric edging to prevent any bear incursions.
The round the lake walk attracted a small fee. If you just wanted to do the raised boardwalk that was free.
We did not saw bears but did find deer happily dining on the local vegetation. From the board walk there were great views back to the mountains and across too the Ohkohsk sea.

A trip to the road, from Asahikawa in Hokkaido, to the remote town of Tondo in the east of the road, there is a class of coastal trains with a special romantic name, called the water object, the blue and white body is covered with flowers and glaciers, walking along the coast, all the way The glacier snow scene is beautiful. When you arrive at a small station called Binxiao Qingshui, you will stay for 20 minutes for tourists to get off the camera. In the evening, Blizzard will arrive, and the warm-hearted flight attendants will remind you to go back to the hotel. Be careful.
Shiretoko National Park, Hokkaido

Shiretoko National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a pristine paradise for #nationalpark enthusiasts. #2024Travel Review
In the Higashi region of Hokkaido, the beautiful Shiretoko Mountains are all along the way from Shiretoko. There are really beautiful scenery everywhere, and it feels very New Zealand-like. It’s just beautiful!
We stayed in a cabin in the camping area that night. The campsites in this camping area are not open in winter, and other cabins in the camping area are not open either. The only one open is this cabin (only one is open in winter). You just need to go next to it. Check in at the "Shari Hot Spring Yumotokan". The distance between the two sides is very close and convenient. You can go directly here to take a bath.
When checking in from "Shari Onsen Yugenkan", the boss saw that we were coming from Taiwan and brought children, so he specially prepared snow play tools for the children to play with ❤️! It’s really considerate~ Once you get the key, you can go back to the cabin in the camping area! The wooden house has a kitchen, bathroom and everything else. There is also a super special lattice bed, one for each person, and the entire wooden house has a heater for extra warmth. The starry sky was so beautiful that night, and when I woke up early in the morning, the sunrise and the snowy scenery were really beautiful.

I visited Furepe Falls!!
Furepe Falls is a famous tourist spot located on the Shiretoko Peninsula in Hokkaido. It is also known by the nickname 'Tears Falls.' The unique feature of this waterfall is that the water springs directly from underground and flows down the cliff without passing through a river, directly into the sea.
Main Features:
1. Low Water Volume
The waterfall does not have a large volume of water, and it flows thinly like tears, hence the name 'Tears Falls.'
2. Scenic Spot
The waterfall flows from a cliff about 100 meters high into the Sea of Okhotsk, creating a magnificent view combined with the surrounding nature. Especially in winter, the waterfall freezes and presents a beautiful appearance like a curtain of ice.
3. Connection with Shiretoko Five Lakes and Nature Trails
You can access Furepe Falls by walking through nature trails. It is often visited in combination with Shiretoko Five Lakes and other tourist attractions.
4. Encounter with Wildlife
On the trails, you may encounter wildlife such as Ezo deer and red foxes.
Access:
It is close to the Utoro area, and you can reach the waterfall by walking about 20-30 minutes from the parking lot. The route allows you to enjoy nature, making it a recommended course for hiking enthusiasts.
Best Season:
The scenery changes depending on the season you visit. In summer, you can enjoy lush green nature, and in winter, you can see the frozen waterfall. If you visit in winter, make sure to take adequate measures against the cold.
It is one of the interesting waterfalls and an excellent spot to enjoy the rich nature of Shiretoko.
I visited the Utoro Lighthouse!!
Utoro Lighthouse is located in the Utoro district on the western side of the Shiretoko Peninsula in Hokkaido. This lighthouse stands on a high ground overlooking the Sea of Okhotsk and plays a role in ensuring the safety of navigation in the area. It is also known as a tourist spot, offering breathtaking views from the lighthouse.
Features
Location
Situated on a high ground in the Utoro district, it offers views of the Sea of Okhotsk, the Shiretoko mountain range, and on clear days, the Northern Territories.
History
Utoro Lighthouse was established in 1957 and has since been an important navigational marker for vessels operating in the waters around the Shiretoko Peninsula.
Scenic Spots
Nearby, there are famous tourist spots such as the Oshinkoshin Falls and the Shiretoko Five Lakes, making the lighthouse area a popular part of the tourist route.
Tourist Highlights
Sunset
The sunset over the Sea of Okhotsk is beautiful and a popular spot for photography.
Wildlife
Around the lighthouse, you may encounter wildlife such as Ezo deer and red foxes.
Utoro Lighthouse is one of the symbols of the nature-rich Shiretoko and a spot that impresses visitors.
Such a wonderful place to visit during winter...very cold but once in a lifetime adventure can satisfied you. worth it....

[Hokkaido] ○○○ Rock near "Utoro Fishery Cooperative Women's Dining Hall"
Do you know what shape this rock is? ?
It has a name given to it as a proper tourist spot, and it is called "Godzilla Rock" because it is shaped like Godzilla.
The name Utoro comes from the Ainu word "Utoro Chikushi," which means a place with many strange rocks. In addition to Godzilla Rock, Oronko Rock is also famous, which has been selected as one of the eight most scenic spots in Shiretoko.
Now, this is the main event, and the luxurious breakfast at the Utoro Fishery Cooperative Women's Dining Hall where my friend was waiting for me was a "three-item bowl" of salmon, salmon roe, and salmon roe.

Let's Learn About Shiretoko, a World Natural Heritage Site in Hokkaido!!
Shiretoko is a peninsula that juts out into the southern part of the Sea of Okhotsk in Hokkaido, and it is a precious place registered as a World Natural Heritage site.
Many wild animals such as brown bears, Ezo deer, salmon, seals, and Steller's sea eagles inhabit the sea, rivers, and land.
In particular, Shiretoko is a habitat for brown bears, and on the Shiretoko walking trails, you may encounter them. Therefore, it is necessary to take a lecture from a local guide before going.
The lecture includes how to deal with encounters with brown bears and what to do if attacked by one, which was a very frightening and realistic lecture.
In fact, while walking on the trail, the person at the front encountered a brown bear, and we were prohibited from proceeding forward and had to return to the original place.

[Hokkaido] "Iwo-yama" emits the smell of sulfur
I have experienced the smell of sulfur from the steam of hot springs many times before, but this was my first time seeing smoke rising from the gaps in the rocks.
I always feel like there is a hot spring bubbling up somewhere, but this mountain has no such atmosphere at all.
You can climb Mt. Io and see the dynamic active volcano with your own eyes.
You can enter the smoke, so you can take a lot of photos that you normally can't take.
However, be careful not to get exposed to the smoke directly, as your clothes will stink.

Wonderful Shari Town, the essential entrance into Shiretoko Peninsula, Hokkaido
This is the best hotel I chose in Hokkaido, located very essentially at the entrance of Shari Town, heading into Shiretoko Peninsula. Known to the world, Shiretoko has variety of species and stunning natural scenery in the world. It is highly recommended as a must-come spot to every one in a life time. But as it is far from the modern cities of Japan mainland, it's hard to find a nicer hotel in this remote area, but Shiretoko Hotel Kitakobushi is the best, in aspect of hotel facilities, service quality and culinary level. I was also indulged in its best ever ONSEN and it just made me rejuvenated after deep dipping into after just 20 minutes. Extremely recommendated.

Hokkaido- Drive to Shari
Breathtaking scenic views on our way to Shiretoko!
Utoru is a hot spring town, a beautiful fishing port, and a charming gentle town
Utoru Onsen is located on the west side of the Shiretoko Peninsula in Hokkaido, facing the Sea of Okhotsk. This hot spring area is famous for its beautiful sunset views, especially the magnificent sight of the sun setting over the sea that can be enjoyed from the hot springs. The spring quality of Utoru Onsen is a sodium bicarbonate saline spring, which is effective for neuralgia, muscle pain, joint pain, and chronic skin diseases. The hot spring water is slightly salty and light brown in color, known as the 'beauty skin bath,' making the skin feel smooth and comfortable.
Utoru Fishing Port is located in Shari Town, Shari District, Hokkaido, and is an important fishing port on the Shiretoko Peninsula. The coastal fisheries here are very developed, especially the fixed-net fishing of salmon and trout, which are famous nationwide. Utoru Fishing Port is not only an important base for fisheries but also serves as an entrance to Shiretoko National Park, attracting a large number of tourists. There are many peculiar rock formations near the port, such as Rindou Rock, Triangle Rock, and Godzilla Rock, which are part of the Shiretoko Eight Views.
Conquering the Sulfur Peak: A Breathtaking Adventure at Mt. Io
#japantrip
My visit to Mt. Io (Atosa-nupuri) was an unforgettable experience! The hike was challenging, but the stunning scenery and unique landscapes made every step worthwhile. The sulfur-rich terrain and steam vents created an otherworldly atmosphere, like walking on a volcanic planet. The panoramic views from the summit were breathtaking, with the surrounding mountains and sea stretching out as far as the eye could see. The hike was a test of endurance, but the sense of accomplishment and the natural beauty of Mt. Io made it an adventure I'll always treasure. If you're up for a challenge, Mt. Io is a must-visit destination!

The mysterious waterfall on the Shiretoko Peninsula in Hokkaido
After boarding the tourist bus from Shiretoko to Lake Akan, the first stop is at the Oshinkoshin Waterfall, one of Japan's top 100 waterfalls and one of the eight scenic spots of Shiretoko.
📍Detailed address:
The waterfall is located along National Route 334 from Shari Town to Utoro, about a 20-minute drive from the hotels in Shiretoko. Most tourists visiting Shiretoko will come here.
🌟Highlights:
The Oshinkoshin Waterfall is about 30 meters wide with a drop of 50 meters, and the water splits into two streams, hence it is also known as the 'Twin Beauties Waterfall'. Visitors can climb up the steps to get close to the waterfall and appreciate the breathtaking beauty in front of them.
The waterfall does not freeze in winter, and by climbing the snow-covered steps, one can admire it up close, with the babbling brook flowing endlessly among the snowy mountains.

Oronko Rock hokkaido
#thingstodo It was an enjoyable little hike. It is free to enter. (I was told it is closed in winter.) The steps up can get your heart rate up but it's not that long until the top. Nice views of the town and the port area. Be careful, going up the steps are cement but of various uneven sizes. At the top the steps and boardwalk are made of wood and there are many bad spots where the wood has rotted or broken. We went at 6am before it got too hot. The lighting then was nice.

Snowy Hokkaido!!
Getting There -

Hotels -

One of the reasons why Shiretoko was landed as a World Heritage Site is that it has a biological network that allows rare animals to survive, covering the sea, rivers and land. If you want to see wild animals, but because it is inconvenient to bring the baby or do not want to walk in the snow for a long time, you can participate in the Winter Wildlife Observatory, sit in the car and explore the outside world through the window.
The whole journey takes about one and a half hours. The guide will send a telescope to everyone for easy observation and a brief introduction while driving. The windows are generally open, but still warmer than outdoors. Can you see the animal depends on your eyes and luck? The squid is more common, and you can see the footprint of the fox. As for the brown bear, can you see it? The guide said that there are two hundred bears here, 90% of them are hibernating, but some are active.
Return time is still relatively early, the guide special zone to see the waterfall (also known as Shuangmei Waterfall). Along the way, the clouds on the sea surface are quite low, as if the world is coming, the momentum is amazing.
What can I play when I come to Shiretoko in winter? First recommend snowshoeing. Snowshoes are worn on the soles of the shoes. They have a large touch area and a total weight of about three pounds, making it easy to walk in the snow. Because its shape is larger than the average shoes, be careful not to pick it up while walking, and don't step on your companion.
Informed the experience group in advance, the guide came to the hotel to receive everyone and set off. If you wear ordinary pants and shoes, don't worry, you will be free to lend you waterproof trousers and boots.
The whole trip is more than two hours, very happy~ shuttle in the native forest wrapped in silver, if you are lucky, you will see the deer! Come to the vast snowfield, in the distance is Shiretoko Lianshan. Looking at the Sea of Okhotsk and the icy waterfall (also known as the tears of the girl) after the icing. If you have seen photos of other seasons, you will think that winter is the most beautiful ~
