ㅤㅤThe heart-wrenching narrative of Celeste can be visualised as this curiously amorphous piece of art that adapts to anyone who experiences it with elegance and ease. It's a fictional Trojan horse that allows you to have a brief look at it before suddenly attacking from behind, getting under your skin and effortlessly destroying all defences – all that under the guise of an unassuming pixel platformer, which makes the unforeseen emotional assault even more surprising. 'Okay, the main character in this game is a girl who is literally six pixels tall. Why am I such a mess?' *sniff*

ㅤㅤCeleste is about many things, but first and foremost it is about climbing a mountain – the action so versatile in its narrative application and so aptly chosen to tell the story of a depressed and rejected trans girl who is struggling to come to terms with her identity and understand her purpose in this world – the world which seems to be either overtly hostile or insidious – and it's hard to tell which one is worse. Obviously, you don't have to associate yourself with our heroine (whose name is Madeline, by the way) to understand what she may be going through. Madeline's conflict is mostly left to the interpretation of the player; nothing is blatantly stated or thrown in your face, and even having completed the game, you may still have a very vague idea of what it is exactly that she is struggling with until you read something about the game online (or hover over my spoiler). This gentle storytelling makes anyone easily sympathise with the main character because we see ourselves in her and fill her battles with our own meaning. The sole reason why Celeste hits you like a train is the simple fact that we are all climbing our own mountains and confronting our own evil reflections lurking in the shadows.

ㅤㅤTaking into account all of the above, I swear I wouldn't have come up with a better gameplay idea that could fit this story so well in a million years – it's a devilish precision platformer that will require immense resolve and undying determination just to complete the seven chapters of the base game, let alone all the extra challenges afterwards. You will be fighting tooth and nail the entire way, clawing through every unforgiving screen, waging wars and making peace with yourself, embracing your vulnerabilities when you desperately need others' help and slowly growing your strengths to save the ones you love. This beautiful metaphor for human existence, this tale of pain and triumph told in a gracefully simple way is the infrared heat-seeking missile with nuclear payload launched at your mangled heart – and you welcome it.

ㅤㅤDespite the extreme challenge that I encountered in Celeste – it may be one of the toughest games I have ever completed – I never found myself losing my temper or getting bitter when failing. It's not the kind of experience that will make you want to throw your controller through the window: all the mechanics feel fair, the respawn on death is pretty much instant, and there are no setbacks when you are punished with having to redo entire chapters for no reason. The sheer narrative value and the amazing music alone can easily keep you going for hours on end in what would look like a deeply frustrating experience to someone not familiar with the game. Once you understand just how much Celeste has to offer, you won't be stopped by a bunch of spikes, strong wind or black goo – because the challenge, however brutal, pales in comparison with what you get from playing.

ㅤㅤIt is also worth mentioning that the developers included Assist Mode for those who are not ready to literally climb mountains just yet. They do state that 'Celeste is meant to be a challenging and rewarding experience' if you try to turn the assistance on, but nothing else stops you from cruising through the game with invincibility and infinite dashes just for the story – although it is safe to say that in this case, the story sort of loses its entire meaning and you will probably gain nothing from it.

Ooh boy, where do I even start... Despite the seemingly innocuous number of hours required to complete the game, they will be filled with some of the most daunting platforming you've ever experienced in your life. Each of the eight chapters has a harder variation called a B-side – and an even tougher variation still, a C-side. Completing these for every chapter grants you most achievements in the game, but Chapter 9, Farewell, which appears only after you've made significant progress in your B- and C-sides, makes everything else seem like child's play, is inexplicably long and culminates in a single screen that requires minutes in a row of perfect platforming. And once you finally see the end of it with your heart jumping out of your chest, you realise that now you need to do it all over again – for that final, hardest achievement.

What are you, scared? Do it! Yes, you can!

ㅤㅤ📌It's a rare thing when a videogame may help you overcome (or at least begin to solve) your own real-life problems. This emotional value makes Celeste an oustanding experience that simply can't be missed.
