Add your Mac to Find My
You can add your Mac to Find My to help you locate and protect it if it’s ever lost or stolen.
Note: For a Mac with macOS 10.14 or earlier, see the Apple Support article Set up Find My iPhone in iOS 12 or earlier.
Add your Mac to Find My
If you’ve already set up Find My on this Mac, you don’t need to complete this task.
On your Mac, choose Apple menu > System Preferences, then click Apple ID .
Open Apple ID preferences for me
If you don’t see Apple ID, click Sign In, then sign in with your Apple ID or click Create Apple ID (if you don’t already have one).
Click iCloud in the sidebar.
Select Find My Mac, then click Allow when asked.
When you turn on Find My Mac, the ability to locate, lock or erase it is turned on automatically. Depending on the model of your Mac, Activation Lock is also turned on automatically to prevent anyone else from activating and using your Mac, even if it’s completely erased. See Activation Lock and Find My.
Turn Find My Mac options on or off
When you turn on Find My Mac, the Find My network is also turned on so your Mac can be found even when it’s not connected to Wi-Fi. You can turn these options on or off whenever you want.
Select Find My Mac, then click Options.
If you see a Details button, you need to set up Find My.
Turn any of the following on or off:
Find My Mac: Turning this option on helps you find your Mac if you misplace it and protect the information on it.
Find My network: Turning this option on helps you find your device (using Bluetooth) even when it isn’t connected to a Wi-Fi or mobile network.
Note: When you turn off the Find My network, your Mac can’t be found by you or anyone else.
If you’re part of a Family Sharing group and you set up location sharing with a family member before your Mac is lost or stolen, that person can help you locate it using Find My. See Change Location Sharing preferences in Family Sharing.
For information about using Find My with other devices, see the user guide for iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Apple Watch or AirPods.
