Mark an item as lost in Find My on Mac
In Find My, an item is an AirTag or third-party product registered to your Apple ID. You can use Find My to mark a missing item as lost.
Important: In order to mark an item as lost, you must register it to your Apple ID before it’s lost. See the Apple Support article Keep track of personal items using Find My.
What happens when you mark an item as lost?
You can add a message saying that the item is lost and include your phone number.
If someone else finds your item, they can use a supported device to see a website with the Lost Mode message. See “View details about an unknown item in Find My” in the user guide for iPhone, iPad or iPod touch.
Turn on Lost Mode for an item
To mark an item as lost, you need to turn on Lost Mode.
In the Find My app on your Mac, click Items.
In the Items list, select the item you want to mark as lost, then click the Info button on the map.
Under Lost Mode, click Enable.
Follow the onscreen instructions to enter a phone number where you can be reached. You can also receive a notification when an updated location for the item is viewable in Find My.
Important: Make sure you allow notifications for the Find My app. See Change Notifications preferences on Mac.
Click Activate.
Change the phone number in the Lost Mode message
In the Find My app on your Mac, click Items.
In the Items list, select the item you marked as lost, then click the Info button on the map.
Under Lost Mode, click Enabled.
Edit the phone number, then click Done.
Turn off Lost Mode for an item
When you find your lost item, turn off Lost Mode.
In the Find My app on your Mac, click Items.
In the Items list, select the item you marked as lost, then click the Info button on the map.
Under Lost Mode, click Enabled.
Click Turn Off Lost Mode.
