🟢 ETP Director meets Vietnam’s Vice Minister Long. ETP Director Philip Timothy ROSE and ETP team in Vietnam, met Vice Minister, Nguyen Hoang Long and senior officials of Vietnam's Ministry of Industry and Trade (MOIT) to discuss ETP’s contribution to Vietnam’s energy transition, including the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP) which is led by Vice Minister Long. This meeting, featuring leading representatives from the Electricity and Renewable Energy Authority (EREA) and the Department of Energy Efficiency and Sustainable Development (EESD), solidified a shared commitment to Vietnam's 2050 net-zero emissions target. ETP will deliver proposed support for MOIT's accelerated energy transition, encompassing key areas such as: floating solar integration for existing coal-fired plants, offshore wind development, energy intensity reduction, industrial decarbonization in response to Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), and alignment with the revised Electricity Law and forthcoming revisions to Vietnam's Law on Energy Efficiency. #ETPinVietnam #JustEnergyTransition #ETP #JETP #VietnamCleanEnergy #Vietnam

I was pleased to join LSE Consulting as a Senior Consultant, to join the Inception workshop, held today in Hà Nội, Vietnam of "Facilitating Private Sector's Access to and Engagement in Vietnam's Energy Sector" organised by the Ministry of Planning and Investment, Vietnam, UNOPS and South East Asia Energy Transition Partnership. It was good to have the opportunity to talk about our work "Encouraging Energy Innovation & Investment in the UK West Midlands" and the great work that has been done through the triple-helix partnership of universities and the private and public sector working together. It was great discussing the vibrant ecosystem of energy innovation in the West Midlands Combined Authority. I was good to share experience of the past decade, talking about developments at the University of Birmingham, with the Birmingham Energy Institute and University of Birmingham – Fraunhofer UMSICHT Joint Research Platform collaborating together, and also talking about the broader partnership of Universities working together to combine their complementary strengths in the region through the Energy Research Accelerator (ERA). We spoke about engaging with policy to shape the environment and context in which energy innovation occurs, talking about how the Powering West Midlands Growth Policy Commission chaired by Sir David King, with Prof. Martin Freer as the academic lead helped inform and shape the regional context for many of the exciting developments that followed in the West Midlands. We also spoke about how Energy Capital acted as a focal point to bring together public and private actors to drive forward Energy Innovation Zones in the West Midlands, before zooming in on the many developments in one of the West Midlands 'Energy Innovation Zones' at Tyseley Energy Park including the work of the Birmingham Centre for Strategic Elements and Critical Materials, and the Birmingham Energy Innovation Centre. It was great to collaborate with Viet Nguyen-Tien, now at the The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), after previously collaborating at the Birmingham Centre for Environmental and Energy Economics and Management (BCEEEM).

In September 2023, the “Permitting and Consenting Process for Offshore Wind (OSW) Projects in the Philippines” project was launched in support of the Philippine Government’s efforts to incorporate OSW and renewables into the nation’s power generation mix by 2030. ⚡ The project is led by the Southeast Asia Energy Transition Partnership (ETP), a programme of the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) and is implemented by NIRAS.   After over a year of implementation, the project held its final workshop last month. 🔋🌳    Through this final workshop, stakeholders and key agencies gathered to review the streamlined process map and proforma (or the narrative description of the application and permitting process) that NIRAS' technical assistance team prepared, as well as to confirm their roles in the permitting framework. 📍🗺️    “Licensing and permitting are foundational to unlocking offshore wind. A streamlined and transparent process encourages investor confidence and ensures projects can proceed efficiently alongside the safeguarding of environmental and social standards,” says John Robert Cotton, ETP’s Senior Program Manager. 🎯    The project has enabled significant steps towards an OSW-powered future, including:   🌬️ Simplifying and establishing a clear process for the permitting of OSW in the Philippines;   🌬️ Standardising guidelines for developers and regulators in OSW;   🌬️ Streamlining permitting processes among government agencies.   “Next steps include refining the process flow maps and compiling them into a compendium or guidebook which we will publish,” ETP Senior Programme Officer Anna Dominique Ortiz shares.   The process flow maps detail the phases involved in OSW development – from predevelopment to decommissioning – and identify the agencies involved. These maps will be integrated into the Energy Virtual One-Stop Shop System, an online platform under the Department of Energy (DOE) that enables the filing and monitoring of energy-related permit applications. 📂👩🏽💻    “I hope you would keep in mind that we have to balance development and the preservation of the environment,” says DOE Undersecretary Rowena Cristina Guevara, urging government representatives present at the workshop to communicate the importance of the permitting and consenting process to their respective departments. “At the end of the day, as leaders in government, we have to do our work correctly and make sure all Filipinos benefit from all our actions.” 🤝🏽    #OffshoreWind #ETP #UNOPS #OSWProjects #RenewableEnergy #Philippines #SDG7
