A 24-year-old biker, Sanjeev Kumar, died after being hit by a Punjab Roadways bus at Sector 41/42 in Chandigarh. He fell from his motorcycle and was run over by the bus.
CHANDIGARH: A 24-year-old biker was killed after being hit by a Punjab Roadways bus at the dividing road of Sector 41/42 on Sunday.
The Sector-36 police kept the body at the mortuary for autopsy and arrested the accused bus driver from the spot.
Later, he was released on bail from the police station.
The police said the victim was identified as Sanjeev Kumar, a resident of Sector 37, Chandigarh. According to Ashwani, Sanjeev's friend, Sanjeev was employed at a private internet providing company in Sector 44, UT, installing internet connections.
The incident occurred around 11 am when he was travelling to Village Kajheri to pick up his colleague. Sanjeev was carrying internet equipment, a lunchbox on the handlebar, a bag, and a ladder.
As he reached the dividing road of Sector 41/42, his motorcycle became unbalanced upon spotting the approaching bus, causing him to fall. His head was crushed under the bus's rear tyre, resulting in immediate death.
Eyewitnesses also confirmed that a ladder caused the motorcycle to become unsteady.

The Punjab Roadways bus was en route from Patti, Tarn Taran, to the Sector 43 bus stand. Police arrested the bus driver, Gurmeet Singh, a resident of Tarn Taran, Punjab. Cops also said the victim, Sanjeev, was wearing a substandard helmet at the time of the accident. A more robust helmet could potentially have prevented the fatality.
Traffic Inspector Surinder Kumar, who reached the accident spot, emphasised the importance of wearing sturdy headgear and using slip roads for two-wheeler safety.
According to Sanjeev's cousin Shravan, who witnessed the incident, Sanjeev had two brothers, and his family was searching for a suitable match for him.
