Ligue 1 2021/22: Is Sven Botman ready for the next step in his career?

Lille’s Sven Botman was of huge interest to a number of clubs, especially last January, but the 22-year-old central defender ended up staying at Lille and looks to set finish another season strongly. The Dutch center-back will once again be linked with a move away from Ligue 1 and will most likely end up completing the transfer this time around.

The following visualisation shows where Sven Botman ranks for a number of key defending metrics in the 2021/22 Ligue 1 season when compared with the other center-backs from Europe’s top five leagues.

Botman is an athletic, young defender looking to make the step up in his career. In only his second season at Lille, Botman is already one of the key players in his team. Having played the most minutes for an outfielder in his first season, he would have once again been Lille’s most played player if not for his injuries this season. The 22-year-old Botman is always there to break a pass or make tackle, as he ranks above average for both Interceptions and Tackles as seen in the visual. He still lacks in passing and is not very confident with the ball, if his numbers are to be believed. It is an aspect of his game that might come under huge criticism if he secures his big move soon. He also ranks above average for Aerial Duels but still needs to improve is he wants to be a consistent starter in a big club.

Sven Botman was vital in Lille winning the league last season and he has once again been Lille’s stand out performers in a below-par season for Lille in 2021/22. However, it wouldn’t be wrong if he stays at Lille for one more season before making his next move but that looks very unlikely for now with a number of Premier League clubs interested in him.
