"The first time there, I chose to read a story to the eight nursery children who come to school every day regardless of the hell in which they live. It fills me with admiration and tears in equal measure. The children introduced themselves to me as we stood in the shelter beneath their school. They were asked to describe how they were feeling. The first stood up, and said proudly “I’m strong”. The rest followed one by one. Six were strong; two were happy. Their answers carved me up inside. Three-years-olds and four-years-olds stood in a shelter as drones and missiles and air defence units and cannon fire raged in the distance. Telling me they were strong was a moment of deep pathos. A moment for which the word ‘pathos’ was made, I feel", David Van Zanten, shares his insights into school life in Kyiv and Dnipro with the media in New Zealand.    Leading a British school in Ukraine during wartime means shaping resilience, fostering hope, building a future amidst the toughest challenges, and learning from the bravest hearts — our children. In August 2024, Mr. David, together with other international educators, joined BISU as our International Academic Director to work on-site and support our mission of delivering quality education during these extraordinary times.    When asked, "Why stay in Ukraine now?" these educators passionately reply, "This is our calling." It was a memorable meeting of two COBIS - Council of British International Schools sister schools in Moldova, where BISU and Heritage International School came together for a meaningful exchange of insights, teaching experiences, and creative ideas. Three international teachers from BISU made the journey from Kyiv to Chișinău, where they were warmly welcomed by our dear friends and partners. This important event took place at a time when both Ukraine and Moldova are navigating pivotal historical moments, with Moldova’s presidential elections coinciding with the visit. The ongoing partnership and deep friendship between BISU and Heritage highlight how learning plays a vital role — especially in challenging times —in nurturing future leaders. This collaboration underscores the mutual commitment to the principles of democracy, empathy, and cooperation, which are crucial for shaping responsible global citizens in an increasingly complex world. It was a powerful testament to the strength of international partnerships and education, and their impact on promoting peace, understanding, and shared progress. The first sessions will delve into Global Perspectives, guided by esteemed experts from Cambridge. This initiative provides educators in Ukraine with an invaluable opportunity to enhance their qualifications and elevate their teaching strategies within an international framework. On 23-24 October, BISU participated in the Principal Forum 2024 for Cambridge International schools across Western Europe, Northern Europe, and Iberia. Hosted by Cambridge University Press & Assessment, the event centred on the forward-thinking theme "Education from the Future." It was a motivating, dynamic experience filled with groundbreaking perspectives, interactive discussions, and invaluable opportunities to connect with leading educational figures from across the region. They shared their knowledge, expertise, and strategies to address the evolving demands of international education. Our global partners remain steadfast in their support of Ukraine's pursuit of world-class teaching practices. BISU Celebrates Remarkable Year of Unity 2023-2024 We are delighted to announce the successful completion of the 2024 academic year at BISU, a year aptly named the "Year of Unity." The BISU community navigated challenges together, emerging stronger and celebrating achievements with a series of end-of-year events. The Pechersk school held an "Oscars"-themed graduation, awarding students and teachers for academic and extracurricular excellence. Graduates received their international A Levels qualifications as well as Ukrainian diplomas, marking a significant milestone. In addition, a festive event filled with activities marked the achievements of our Primary students, with special congratulations to the Year 6 students transitioning to Secondary school. Similar celebrations were held at the Dnipro school, acknowledging the incredible efforts of students and teachers throughout the year. We are incredibly proud of our resilient community and their unwavering dedication and courage. Here's to many brighter years ahead at BISU! In November 2023, British educator Mr. Matthew joined The British International School, Ukraine in Dnipro. While the situation in Ukraine is challenging, his experience has been deeply rewarding.
