The war is devastating water resources and entire ecosystems. For millions of Ukrainians, the lack of access to drinking water has become a harsh reality. This issue affects all of us, impacting our health, the environment, and our future. Caritas Ukraine is tirelessly implementing a Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) assistance program to support the affected regions. Here’s what we’re doing: 🔹 Restoring water supply sources 🔹 Providing access to safe drinking water 🔹 Addressing basic hygiene needs In 2024, our WASH projects reached approximately 200,000 people in frontline communities across Donetsk, Dnipro, Kharkiv, Zaporizhzhia, and Mykolaiv oblasts. We helped restore access to safe water for those in need. 💧 Damage to water resources is not just a local issue—it impacts the entire country. Overcoming this challenge requires the collective efforts of international partners, authorities, and humanitarian organizations. 📢 Today, we are launching the #WASHinWAR campaign to shed light on the consequences of the aggressor’s environmental terrorism. The REMARKET project team at Caritas Ukraine was honored to host a delegation of partners from Cordaid (Netherlands). We welcomed:  🔹 Heleen van den Berg, CEO of Cordaid, who visited Ukraine for the first time. 🔹Inge Leuverink, Humanitarian Advisor, for whom this is the sixth visit. 🔹Mickael Franci, editor, photographer and videographer at Cordaid. Together with our colleagues from Caritas Ukraine: Vasyl Mikula, Volodymyr Yakymets and Andriana Terekhovska, they talked to the teams of the ELIS (2023-2024) and REMARKET (2024-2027) projects, and also visited participants of the Microbusiness Support and Cash for Job programs in Caritas Kolomyya and Caritas Lviv. The United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, Tom Fletcher, visited the transit center in Pavlohrad to learn about the work of Caritas Mariupol and observe how residents of the Donetsk region are being supported during evacuation. Representatives from the Donetsk Regional Military Administration and the Humanitarian Coordination Center also attended the meeting. They shared details about the evacuation process and the urgent assistance required for those in need. Tom Fletcher also had the opportunity to speak directly with internally displaced persons and assess their living conditions firsthand. In addition, the UN Under-Secretary-General observed the hot meal distribution point, hygiene transit kits for IDPs, and one of the children’s rooms, where young ones receive care and support. This meeting highlighted the importance of a systematic approach to assisting those affected, especially during evacuations from regions facing humanitarian challenges. 💬 “We will finally buy firewood. The first year we moved in, we saved a lot of money to be able to buy firewood. Here we have thin walls, no foundation... Although we have done a lot in this house, it is cold. And now it's getting colder, so we'll warm up. This is a very good help for us. Because we live on a pension, my wife has a group II disability, we don't have much opportunity to buy firewood. It's very hard, but we don't cry.”   Mr. Oleksandr, 59, and his wife Mrs. Yevheniia were evacuated from their native Soledar in 2022 to the village of Nova Cherneshchyna in the Sakhnovshchyna community of Kharkiv Oblast.    The house in which they found their temporary shelter was not entirely suitable for living. The village is constantly shelled and as a result of another missile strike, the windows in their house were blown out. Oleksandr and Yevheniia do not have a regular income to repair their home. They don't even have enough money to cover their basic needs, let alone buy firewood to heat their home.   💬 “Donetsk region was destroyed, no stone was left unturned. The nearest villages too... People let us stay in their houses in the village. But there is no work in that village. We had to go to the district, where there is work, but men of my age are hardly ever hired. Before that, I had 21 years of experience as a miner - I mined salt, and now I am a pensioner. So we are very grateful for this help for our family.”   So, on the eve of winter, this couple received financial assistance to buy firewood. In addition to them, more than 7,000 households in eastern Ukraine have received such assistance as part of a project by the International Organization for Migration IOM Ukraine in cooperation with Caritas Ukraine and funded by the USAID - Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance. #HumanitarianAid  #MPCA #IOM_CaritasUkraine 

The Caritas Chernihiv Charitable Foundation welcomed a delegation from the EU and international humanitarian organizations. Hadja Lahbib, the EU Commissioner for Civil Protection and Equality, Humanitarian Aid, Crisis Preparedness, and Management, visited the Charitable Foundation on a working visit. The event also included the participation of the President of Caritas Ukraine, Tetiana Stawnychy, as well as representatives from EU Civil Protection & Humanitarian Aid, Caritas Austria, and national managers of Caritas Ukraine. During the visit, the guests were introduced to the Foundation's activities, which, with the support of the EU, implements the project "Ensuring Full Access to Protection for War-Affected Populations in Frontline Areas of Ukraine (ECHO3)." The visit included meetings with participants who actively attend various activities organized by the Caritas Chernihiv Foundation. The distinguished guests attended a "Game Therapy" session at the Resilience Center and showed great interest in a meeting organized for seniors within the framework of the "Cozy Time" club. At the end of the visit, the guests received symbolic gifts, lovingly handcrafted by participants of the "Child-Friendly Space." The support of European partners is a crucial factor in the Foundation's daily activities. It strengthens our capacity and enables us to provide vital assistance to Ukrainians in need. We are sincerely grateful for the significant contribution to the development of our society!

Last week, we had the honor of speaking at the All-Ukrainian Educational and Practical Conference "Supported Living as a Path to Integration: Experience, Challenges, and Development Prospects in Ukraine." We extend our gratitude to the Ministry of Social Policy of Ukraine and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) UNDP Ukraine for organizing the event. The conference provided a platform for discussing crucial aspects of the supported living social service, sharing experiences with colleagues, and exploring strategic directions for its implementation in Ukraine. The experience of Caritas Ukraine was highlighted as one of the key examples. Through the Supported Living Program, we operate two homes and one apartment for young people with disabilities, accommodating 20 residents aged 18 to 45. These are unique spaces where individuals can develop independent living skills, integrate into the community, and feel a sense of dignity. “However, in Ukraine, this mechanism for integrating people with disabilities is not yet widespread. We all need to work on raising awareness about this opportunity, preparing qualified personnel, and supporting the implementation of this initiative in communities. This is a significant collective effort that requires the involvement of all stakeholders,” – emphasized Natalia Harbuz, Head of the Inclusion Program, during her speech. Caritas Ukraine, for its part, aims to disseminate and expand this unique experience both within and beyond its network. We believe that in the near future, we can move closer to a society where every individual has equal opportunities for a dignified life and self-fulfillment.
