A UNDP team is now on the ground in Mykolaiv, which has been left partially without heat and electricity due to recent attacks. The team is actively working assess current needs to ensure a stable and resilient energy supply. Despite a relatively mild winter, nighttime temperatures have dropped to -10°C in recent days, leaving thousands of residents without critical services for a second consecutive day. Swift and coordinated action is essential to overcoming this energy crisis. With support from the Government of Denmark, UNDP has already been implementing an energy project that has provided equipment for power transmission and generation, helping to meet the basic needs of Mykolaiv residents. Today, UNDP representatives visited Mykolaiv to work with local partners in identifying further needs, ensuring access to essential services – heat, electricity, water supply, and sanitation. Together with international partners, UNDP is also supporting Mykolaiv and other Ukrainian cities in transitioning to a decentralized energy system, which will enhance the resilience of the energy sector and reduce vulnerability to future crises.

We're proud to announce a significant step forward in family reunification efforts in Ukraine. With support from the Dutch government, UNDP has donated essential forensic devices and supplies, including 250 chips for ANDE portable DNA analysis laboratories, to the National Police of Ukraine. This groundbreaking technology enables the creation of complete DNA profiles in just 90 minutes, and allows for the identification of genetic relationships within minutes. As the conflict has left many Ukrainian children separated from their families, this initiative is critical. It not only strengthens the capabilities of Ukraine's justice system but also exemplifies a commitment to protecting the most vulnerable citizens. Jaco Cilliers, UNDP Resident Representative in Ukraine, notes the urgency of fortifying justice systems during times of conflict, emphasizing that we are not just reuniting families – we're building resilient institutions ready to face the challenges of war. 🇨🇦🇺🇳 Ambassador of Canada to Ukraine Natalka Cmoc and UNDP Resident Representative in Ukraine Jaco Cilliers paid a working visit to Kamianske, Dnipropetrovsk Oblast. They met with local authorities and reviewed key initiatives aimed at community recovery and support for its residents, implemented with assistance from UNDP and its partners. The delegation visited: 🔹 The Recovery and Development Office, established in 2023 with support from UNDP and the European Union (EU). The office facilitates resource mobilization for community development, promotes participatory governance, and coordinates recovery projects. Thanks to its efforts, more than US$80 million in grants and loans have been secured for the community’s development. 🔹 Lyceum 16, one of the facilities reconstructed under the Ukraine Early Recovery Programme, supported by the European Investment Bank, the EU, and UNDP. This initiative has transformed the school into a modern and comfortable learning environment for students and teachers. 🔹 The “Place of Strength” Community Resilience Centre, established in partnership with the EU, UNDP, and UNFPA, alongside local authorities and civil society. The centre hosts seminars and training sessions to strengthen resilience and mental health, with a particular focus on youth and families affected by the war. 🇨🇦🇺🇳 A delegation led by Natalka Cmoc, Ambassador of Canada to Ukraine, visited Social Adaptation Spaces in Myrhorod, Poltava Oblast and Slobozhanske, Dnipropetrovsk Oblast. Both facilities were opened with support from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Ukraine and the Government of Canada. These spaces are fully equipped to ensure comfort and accessibility, featuring furniture, computers, projectors, televisions, and tablets. Qualified specialists provide social services, organize self-help groups, and facilitate active aging clubs. 🤗 The goal of these spaces is to help community residents integrate into society, helping them overcome the challenges of war. Specifically, the facility in Myrhorod focuses on working with internally displaced persons (IDPs), people with disabilities, and older adults, while the one in Slobozhanske primarily supports veterans and IDPs. Local communities renovated the premises using their own funds, while UNDP and the Government of Canada provided equipment, furniture, and expert support. 🤝 During the visit to Slobozhanske, the delegation also observed the work of a mobile social services unit. A specially equipped vehicle, provided by the European Union and UNDP, enables a multidisciplinary team of specialists to deliver a wide range of home care, palliative care, and essential aid services directly to those in need. 📷 Photo credit: Ivan Lavrenko / UNDP in Ukraine

Alisa dreams of making a discovery that will change the world. For now, she dominates city Olympiads, with victories in eight subjects – her favourites being chemistry and geography. 🧪🗺 She firmly believes that success in learning depends not only on talent and hard work, but also on the environment. 💭 “Comfortable school conditions and a large, safe shelter help ease my worries about my child while she is in class. Alisa can fully focus on learning and gaining knowledge without distractions," explained her mother, Viktoria. Berdychiv Lyceum “Territory 12,” where Alisa studies, is one of 66 schools being restored under the “EU4UASchools: Build Back Better” project. This initiative, led by the European Union and the United Nations Development Programme, has already brought more than 18,000 students and teachers back to safe and modern classrooms. 🇪🇺🇺🇳 👩🎓👩🔬 Every year, on 11 February, we celebrate the International Day of Women and Girls in Science. Rebuilding Ukrainian schools is not just about repairs — it is about giving children the chance to catch up on lost learning, explore the world, and, perhaps, change it for the better with their inventions and achievements. 📷 Photo: Volodymyr Lybenskyi / ECOMM #EU4UASchools
