"Men are not obsessed with landing in a soft spot but rather softening where they have landed. It's therefore not hard to tell a boy who will grow into a man and a boy who will grow into just an old boy- it is easy for parents to tell as soon as you make 5 years" Said by my dad in 2018.

NEW A LEVEL CURRICULUM IS A WELCOME MOVE In Uganda, students receive the Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) that is popularly known as A level when they finish the 2-year upper secondary school which is also called the HSC (meaning High School Certificate). It is comparable to GCE A-Level in the UK. The Ministry of Education and Sports in Uganda has finally given the green light to the development of a new A-Level competence-based curriculum. Sources from the Ministry of Education headquarters have revealed that Education Minister Janet Kataha Museveni has allowed the National Curriculum Development Centre to proceed with the development of the revised curriculum and thus the National Curriculum development center (NCDC) is working to make the curriculum ready for implementation. Interesting features of New A Level Curriculum 1. Occupational/Trade subject: In addition to other subjects, the proposal to have each student have a practical subject. I believe this will increase the transition rate from school to the world of work. 2. Longer period to complete A level: - Having up to five years is welcome move that will enable more people especially girls and adults resuming secondary school education to complete the level. For example, in order to balance life, work and studies mothers who have been out of school can take one subject at ago until they're done with A level. If I have to be studying only mathematics, it means i will be required to be in school only during days/time when Mathematics lessons are scheduled thus enabling me to attend to other errands while also pursuing my studies. According to the proposed amendments in the A-Level curriculum, the tenure for A-Level will be a minimum of two years and maximum of five years to enhance inclusivity - Long period of completing A level will also reduce the cost of education by eliminating the costly bridge courses that are currently being conducted by universities. 3. Repeating only Failed Subjects: There is no logic in the old practice of having to repeat the entire combination when actually its one paper that you failed. The old practice was inefficient. 4. Real Life studies: General Paper, which was initially being offered by all students, will be replaced with contemporary studies such as generic, ICT and research skills; financial literacy, basic nutrition, climate change, functional statistics and peace building. These subjects are real life and thus better preparation to face life confidently What else needs to be done? 1. Do not only introduce occupational subjects, invest in the First work experience by the graduates of secondary education. 2. As much as the curriculum changes are good, failure to have sufficient training for teachers and schools for the transition is just another good move that will be failed by operational inefficiencies 3. Reducing the subjects at A level: The papers per subject are still many and there is justification for such.
