Yesterday, California declared a state of emergency in response to the 2024 bird flu (H5N1) outbreak, which is now found in hundreds of dairy cow herds. To date, 61 cases of H5N1 have been identified by the CDC in humans in the United States, with 34 of these cases located in California and one of these cases sending a Louisiana man into critical condition. These strains of highly pathogenic H5N1 viruses have been identified in more than 125 million poultry and more than 10,000 wild birds since 2022.
