Yesterday, we had the privilege of hosting an insightful event with AMMITEC at the Yacht Club of Greece, where maritime industry professionals gathered to join our great debate ‘Is Maritime Technology a Cost Centre or a Driver of Value?’ The event opened with a welcome from Themistoklis Sardis, President of AMMITEC, and featured thought-provoking sessions from guest speakers. These presentations were followed by an interactive panel discussion where guests explored how digital technology is transforming shipping operations. Key takeaways from our esteemed speakers: 🔹 Richard Buckley, Founder & CEO, 90POE: Highlighted the maritime industry's significantly lower investment in technology compared to other sectors, emphasising the transformative potential of digital solutions to reduce fuel costs, prevent downtime, optimise fleet positioning, and minimise revenue leakage. Recognising technology as a strategic enabler rather than a cost centre is essential for the industry to unlock sustainable growth, enhanced efficiency, and long-term profitability. 🔹 Eleni Vazintari, General Fleet Manager – Crewing, Zodiac Maritime: Discussed how democratising data and breaking down silos through digitalisation can streamline workflows and reduce operational costs. She stressed the importance of validated, auditable data for ensuring accuracy and transparency, which strengthens organisational trust and enhances operational outcomes, while also benefiting environmental sustainability and seafarer welfare. 🔹 Lydia Ntamkarelou, Group Operational Excellence Manager, Navilands Group: Focused on the human element, emphasising the importance of effective training and performance monitoring to turn technology into a value driver rather than a cost burden. Lydia advocated for using real-time data and performance monitoring to improve cost efficiency and drive operational excellence and stressed that technology complements rather than replaces human skills. The event concluded with an open discussion, where attendees engaged directly with the panel, debating the value and perception of digital technology in maritime operations. The forum sparked vibrant conversations, leaving us with a renewed vision of how technology can revolutionise the maritime industry.
