“If US policies deprioritise the battery supply chain, it will have a damning impact on any non-China battery supply chain strategies.” - Dr. Yashraj Tripathy What could the battery landscape look like under another Trump presidency? Can the US catch up to China’s rapidly growing competitive lead? And what role might Elon Musk play in shaping this future? Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/e6BKZyuK
🔋 Sustainable Batteries: What’s changed from 2016 to 2023? 🔋 We took a look under the hood (literally!) and dismantled three high-energy batteries to find out ourselves Here’s what we learned: 📉 Less is More: From LG’s 2016 model to Tesla’s 2023 cell, manufacturers have significantly reduced the amount of heavy materials like nickel, manganese, and cobalt per kWh of energy. ♻️ Lighter & Greener: The shift towards reduced reliance on transition metals means a more sustainable battery with a lower carbon footprint. For a 60 kWh Tesla 4680 battery, that translates to around 6 kg fewer transition metals compared to LG’s 2016 cell—think of the mining and CO₂ savings! 💡 Better Range, Less Emissions: A lighter battery isn’t just easier on the planet; it also boosts energy efficiency, meaning longer ranges for EVs with fewer emissions. 🔋 The Challenge of Designing eVTOL Battery Packs 🚁 Designing eVTOL battery packs isn’t just about meeting weight budgets—it’s about making them work in the real world. Imagine a customer requesting a 250 kg battery pack that lasts 1,000 cycles per year. Sounds great, right? The reality? That pack would need to be replaced every 6-8 months, severely impacting the business case. Factors like operating temperature, SOC window, and charge time have an even greater impact on battery life than weight alone. But who has the time and budget for redundant testing? That’s why we provide the models and data essential for battery development, saving you time and resources. Learn more about predicting eVTOL battery behaviour: https://lnkd.in/dBEbvYSV
💚 About:Employee Spotlights 💚 Meet AJ S., About:Energy’s Senior Software Engineer! ⚡ Being one of the first few team members of About:Energy, AJ has spearheaded building out The Voltt platform! On The Voltt, you're able to request a model, learn from battery experts, use web tools to design packs, predict cell lifetime or explore cell anatomy. Fun fact: When he's not working, you can find AJ either studying for his part-time MSc at the University of Oxford, scaling Mt. Everest or drinking a protein shake 💪
