Innovation with the NHS is hard. Really hard. Especially for those early on in their healthtech journey. Today I felt incredibly lucky and was invited to sit on a panel at the finale of a Commercialisation Academy for #healthtech innovators in the South West. Hosted by the Health Innovation West of England, 6 early stage hand-picked companies have been on a journey developing their offering, getting advice and finessing their pitches. They also have developed a real community and camaraderie amongst themselves, which given what a bruising place healthcare innovation is, was wonderful to see. Mentored and led by the Triple Chasm, it was abundantly clear how much these #founders have gained from their journey. But, it is probably just the beginning. This means the hard knocks, the bruises, the rejections and the huge amount of graft behind the scenes has only just begun. Innovating is hard. Innovating with the NHS as a client is really, really hard - and I really wish those who were there today all the best. Great pitches, great ideas, and (mostly!) a great panel asking probing and challenging questions. Avid Health - showing the power of engaging patients in their care with health coaches and #ai Laura Tan The Sound Doctor - inspired audiovisuals and content with an eye on our rich and diverse population Rosie Runciman Dominic Arkwright Feedback Medical / Bleepa - realising a solution for fragmented MDT care and communications Richard Dulcamara Acumentice l B Corp Certified and the Sigma team Philip Purdy Karina Malhotra - leveraging years of experiences in Operations into usable dashboards, process automation and meaningful productivity gains EXPERT SELF CARE LTD - using frontline experience to provide curated and locally appropriate resources Knut Schroeder RateMyShift providing real-time barometers of staff well-being and morale Olivia Crossing Annie Taylor And a big thank you to the other panel members for their wisdom and insights. Sanjoy Shah, Owen Thomas from One Care (BNSSG) C.I.C., Chris Trow, Natasha Swinscoe Tim Keen Peter Carpenter Sebastian Habibi Sam Dods Uday Phadke Roz Fairburn - keep doing what you're doing. It sounds like a wonderful program you've been running. Honorable mention to Cognitant Group Limited whom had to withdraw from today at short notice.

🥼 Empowering health - how UTIs could be diagnosed at home! 🥼 UTIs affect 50-60% of women and account for around 3% of UK GP appointments, but what if this very common health problem could be diagnosed and treated at home? "With our products, you can diagnose a UTI in the comfort, convenience and privacy of your own home," TestCard.com co-founder Andrew Botham told Karina Malhotra in episode 3 of the Inside Health Innovation podcast. "And then access treatment the next day." Check out the clip below which highlights how important UTI treatment is, especially to female health. Was mental health ignored in the latest NHS planning guidance? Karina Malhotra and Michael Watson discuss how the absence of any mention of community mental health waiting times standards felt very strange, but Michael says it's also important to look at the positives. "The Mental Health Investment Standard was preserved, and it was good to see recognition of the importance of reducing length of stay through crisis services, and the long-standing commitment to the reduction of inpatient beds for those with learning disabilities and autism," Michael said. That said, he argued that only focusing on #crisis and #inpatient services - and not looking at #community services - meant you were only looking at half of the picture. "We all know that people deteriorate when they're waiting for longer, and are then more likely to present in crisis and be in those very inpatient beds we're trying to reduce," Michael added. 🎙️Home tests can help revolutionise prostate #cancer screening! 🎙️ In episode 3 of the Inside Health Innovation Podcast, Andrew Botham tells Karina Malhotra about a new model for #prostatecancer screening that involves sending #test kits to people's homes and enabling men to do it in a private setting with no-one standing over their shoulder. "Men are really bad at going into clinical settings and admitting something's wrong, but they're very good at adopting new technology and doing things at their own steam in the privacy of their own home," Andrew said. "They can do the test and this is then sent centrally to understand what the next steps might need to be." Shockingly, for prostate cancer, when letters go out to high-risk populations only around 30% of people answer that letter. Prostate cancer kills more people than any other cancer, but survival rates up to stage 3 are really good - highlighting the importance of catching it early and having a more open conversation about it among men. You can see the full clip below and watch/listen to the whole episode for more great insights: https://lnkd.in/encGZJ9h
