  • 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝗼𝗻𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗖𝗣𝗗 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗳𝗼𝗿 Archer Humphryes Architects 📚   Yesterday we were fortunate enough to sign off on our CPD sessions with a final online webinar for the lovely employees at Archer Humphryes Architects to deliver our accredited CPD webinar on the 'Design capabilities, characteristics, and applications of fire & smoke curtains. Founded in 2002, the practice is based in London and employs a team of up to 30 design professionals, including architects and designers. The studio has completed projects both in the UK and abroad within the cultural, residential and hospitality sectors. Notable projects include the renovation of the Queen Elizabeth Hall Southbank Centre in London - visit their website here: https://lnkd.in/dYptp3Em   Some highlights of the webinar included:   🔸 Common headaches with fire curtains and how they are overcome with modern designs   🔸 The BS 8524-1 impact test is a test that is not designed for flexible material doors such as fire curtains. It comes from BS5234-2:1992 “Partitions (including matching linings) — Part 2 etc.”. It is a deformation test for solid partitions and doors that is not appropriate for flexible door materials such as fire curtains (the correct load test for fire curtain fabric and retention systems is the horizontal weight test in a furnace, as required by BS EN 15269-11, mandatory under BS EN 16034 for EXAPs),   🔸 The hot motor test "doesn't do what it says on the tin" (and it's dangerous):   1️⃣ ) no one should operate a fire curtain when the temperature in the vicinity of the fire curtain is 400°C as it would endanger their own life as well as endanger the whole building, and   2️⃣ ) The control Panel is not hot tested, and the motors rely on the Control Panel to operate so the test doesn't demonstrate performance in real-life   Big thanks to Bex Tang for setting up everyone who joined us; we hope you found it as valuable as we did sharing it! Grenfell Phase 2 Inquiry Report: I recently spoke at London Build 2024 Expo on fire safety regulation in the context of the Grenfell Phase 2 Inquiry report, as published earlier this autumn. 30,000 people attended that event over its two days at Olympia in November. The organisers of that discussion - Adexon Fire & Smoke Curtains - have kindly provided me with the video of my panel session, and I attach below a section of that video, which is less than 10 minutes long, but includes my opening remarks about both the Grenfell tragedy itself, the Phase 2 Public Inquiry report, and the very instructive response made to my comments by the former UK Chief Construction Adviser Paul Morrell OBE. In the context of the important ongoing conversation between industry and Government at this time, I wanted to share this video. If anyone would like to see the full session, I can provide on request. #grenfell #buildingsafety #constructionlaw #charlesrussellspeechlys
