☀️ Good Morning All ☀️ Last month, we looked at the Disabled Persons (Employment) Act 1944 and today we're continuing our focus on employment amongst war veterans. 🪖 After World War One ended in 1918, almost two million men returned to Britain with some form of disability and a desperate need for rehabilitation and training was identified. ❗ A number of charities and government institutions set up schemes to support injured servicemen, and ‘Villages Centres Council for Curative Treatment and Training’ proved to be a popular idea with John Hodge, who was Minster for Pensions at the time. 🏡 One of these centres was called Enham Place, located near Andover, and provided 1027 acres of space where veterans could live and train. By 1921, over 500 men had lived at Enham and training was provided in agriculture, horticulture, forestry, poultry-rearing, electrical fitting, basket-making, carpentry and joinery, boot and shoe repairing, and furniture making. Similar centres were set up around the U.K. all with the same aim of getting injured servicemen back into the workforce. Other initiatives, such as the YMCA's 'Don't Pity A Disabled Man' helped thousands of men to find meaningful employment in the years following the War. 💼 #ADN #UKDHM #DisabilityHistory #AdvisorsDeafNetwork #DisabilityHistoryMonth2024

🥳 Happy International Day of Persons with Disabilities! 🥳 This annual celebration was first marked in 1992 and is a great opportunity to reflect on the progress that has been made so far in disability rights and equality, involving over 100 countries around the world. 🌍 Previous themes have included 'A Voice of our Own' (2003) and 'Decent Work for Persons with Disabilities' (2007), meaning it aligns perfectly with the aims of UK Disability History Month. It also pushes us to think about the future of accessibility and the ongoing need for better inclusion and opportunities for disabled people, while making a firm commitment to create a world characterised by equal human rights. 🙋 #ADN #UKDHM #IDPWB #Accessibility #Disability #AdvisorsDeafNetwork

👋 Happy Friday! 👋 Continuing with our UK Disability History Month posts, today we're focusing on an influential Scottish man who worked tirelessly to improve the livelihoods of his Deaf peers in the 1800s. ⌛ James Herriot was born Deaf in 1815 in Leith, Scotland. Apprenticed to a tailor aged 12, he trained and worked in Edinburgh for a number of years before relocating to Manchester where he employed twelve men, six of whom were also Deaf. James spent decades advocating for the employment of Deaf people and fought for equal wages. 🧵 He was also a founding member of the Manchester Deaf Centre (then the Manchester Institute for the Deaf) in 1846, which is still supporting the d/Deaf community in the North of England today. The British Sign Language Broadcasting Trust produced a short film on his life (presented in BSL with English subtitles) which you can watch here: https://lnkd.in/ekfa7EWJ

👋 Happy Monday! 👋 UK Disability History Month continues and today we're focusing on a scheme that most people have heard of, but very few actually encounter. 🤔 The Access to Work (ATW) Scheme was launched by the Department for Work and Pensions in June 1994. 👈 The Scheme aims to provide people with physical and mental disabilities with the tools to succeed in the workplace, ranging from Communication Support Workers (CSWs) and notetakers to assistive software and specialist equipment. ATW can also help d/Deaf students by providing interpreters or lip-speakers for interviews when applying for graduate jobs. 👏 As of 2024, people supported by this Scheme can be awarded up to £69,260 per year, depending on their individual needs. 💵 While there have been critiques of processing times, Access to Work has helped millions of people get into or stay in work in England, Scotland, and Wales. 🎉 Happy 30th Birthday Access to Work! 🥳 #UKDHM #ATW #AccessToWork #AdvisorsDeafNetwork #ADN #Accessibility #DisabilityHistory

☀️ Good morning all☀️ We’ve made it to halfway through the week and we’re almost a week into UK Disability History Month! 🎉 This year’s theme ‘Employment and Livelihood’ celebrates the trailblazers and key moments in Disability History, and so today we’re taking a look at the Disabled Persons (Employment) Act 1944. 🤔 With large numbers of men and women being left disabled by injuries sustained in the Second World War, the Government had to come up with ways to get them back into the workforce. 💼 The Act established a voluntary register which individuals could apply to join which would provide then with employment support and act in cases of unfair dismissal on disability grounds. Applications were made to a committee comprising a Local authority representative, medical practitioner, ex-military personnel, and at least two women. The register was not reserved for the war-wounded and could be joined by anyone with a long-term condition. 🧑⚕️ See some more facts about the Act below. Amazing news for Culver Law Ltd! 🏆 This is a big win for Deaf accessibility in the Legal field and we're really pleased that the judges recognised Culver's ongoing commitment to making Legal services open to all who need them, regardless of the communication methods they use. 🎉
🎉 Success! 🎉 Culver Law are incredibly proud to announce that we won this year’s 'Innovation and Transformation Award' for our work in Deaf accessibility at Thursday’s British Wills and Probate Awards! 🏆 The Award recognises ‘genuine innovation’ that ‘breaks new ground’ in the world of Wills and Probate, and Culver’s commitment to accessibility and improved awareness of challenges faced by D/deaf people within the Legal system really reflects this. With Deaf Awareness Training for all staff from Office Assistants to Partners, use of SignVideo, SignLive, and Signly, and establishment of the Advisers for Deaf Network, we are heavily engaged with the Deaf community and are excited to see where this journey will take us next. ⏩ Only last month, our popular Free Will Writing partnership with the British Deaf Association was launched, making will-writing accessible to those who would otherwise be excluded from accessing services in their preferred language. 👏 About the Awards: Since launching in 2018 The British Wills and Probate Awards has grown to become the largest and most prestigious event dedicated to recognising and celebrating the work of will writing and private client teams across England and Wales. The 2024 awards, which were sponsored by CTT Group, were recently hosted in Manchester on 10th October, with submissions scrutinised by a panel of independent and expert judges drawn from across the legal services spectrum who score each entry with the top scoring firms recognised as winners and highly commended. Further details about The British Wills and Probate Awards 2024, and a full recording of the evening’s celebration, are available at https://lnkd.in/d7wRghm. 👀 #WillsAndProbate #BWAP2024 #CulverLaw #InnovationAndTransformation #Awards #Winners #Accessibility #Deaf

As the International Week of Deaf People 2024 comes to a close this weekend, the final theme ‘Investing in the Future of Deaf Communities’ calls on us to look forwards. ⏩ For D/deaf people in the U.K. trying to access Legal and Financial Services can present many barriers, including the lack of qualified interpreters, communication breakdown, and not feeling listened to when discussing important information about their future. 😕 In a 2019 report published by the charity SignHealth which looked at the D/deaf community’s engagement with healthcare services, 56% of D/deaf people reported not using these services due to the serious lack of interpreters. This cannot be allowed to happen in our sectors. 🚫 That’s why we were so pleased to hear of the partnership between Culver Law and the British Deaf Association announced last week that enables Deaf people to discuss their Will in BSL – an amazing step forward in practical Legal engagement and equality. 🤝 The scheme allows users to leave a donation to a charity of their choice in their Will which could have a huge impact on the longevity of many much-loved and much-needed Deaf charities. 💰 See Culver Law and the BDA’s joint press release here: https://lnkd.in/eSMnwvzJ #InternationalWeekOfDeafPeople #IWDP2024 #Wills #Accessibility #AdvisersForDeafNetwork #CulverLaw #BDA #Deaf

Happy Wednesday! 😁 International Week of Deaf People continues and today’s theme is ‘Sign Language Advocacy’. Many people believe that British Sign Language is simply a signed version of English, but this isn’t true! 🙅♀️ Officially recognised as a language in its own right in March 2003, BSL has its own grammar, linguistics, and a number of signs which have no English equivalent. The World Federation of the Deaf’s ‘Declaration on the Rights of Deaf Children’ states that ‘National Sign Language(s) are the only fully accessible language for deaf children from birth onwards’, and so today we celebrate the progress made in the twenty-one years since recognition, but push for greater advancement – particularly in the Professional Services Sector. ⚖ 💵 #InternationalWeekOfDeafPeople #SignLanguageAdvocacy #Accessibility #AdvisersForDeafNetwork #ADN

Happy International Week of Deaf People! 📅 Each day of this week has a different theme, and today we’re kicking things off with the International Day of Sign Languages! To mark the occasion, have a look at some fun facts about Sign Language: 🕐 The earliest defined use of fingers to create an alphabet dates back to 673AD! 👩👧👦 There are more than twenty different signs for the word ‘people’ in BSL. 🗣 British Sign Language (BSL) is the fourth most commonly used language in the U.K. 🤷♂️ Sign Language is NOT universal - a BSL user will not understand an American Sign Language (ASL) user. 🗺 Just like with spoken languages, Sign Language users have regional ‘accents’, with different people using different signs for the same word! #InternationalDayOfSignLanguages #InternationalWeekOfDeafPeople #BSL #SignLanguage #IDSL24 #IWDP24 #AdvisersForDeafNetwork
