Russia has vetoed the latest UN Security Council resolution calling for a ceasefire in Sudan and protection of civilians. Earlier this year, two resolutions for a truce in El Fasher and during Ramadan passed with Russia abstention. What is next for the people in Sudan desperately hoping for peace? In South Africa, a controversial crackdown on illegal miners has drawn attention to the country's natural resources - are they a boon or bane? Meanwhile, opportunistic land grabbers are targeting drought-stricken farmers in Zambia.

The weather outside is frightful (🥶 in London ), so stay in and listen to a new podcast! This week on 'If You Were In Charge', Sanam Naraghi Anderlini, MBE, joins Mohammad Darawshe for an insightful listen on Jewish-Arab relations inside Israel. Here's a clip, there's much more in the full programme I'll put a link in the comments below. Produced by Africa Digital Audio (ADA) Productions.
ADA's Zawadi Mudibo presented and produced this report for BBC Business Daily, following the work of Kenyan engineer Joseph Nguthiru, who is turning the invasive water hyacinth in Lake Naivasha into a valuable resource. We hope to tell many more inspiring African stories like this across the BBC and other major news organizations. If you have a great story you'd like to bring to life, get in touch!

A world leaders’ meeting to drive the conversation and compel action around climate action, sustainability targets, and the energy transition is underway at this year’s COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan🇦🇿.
The annual Conference of Parties (COP), is organized by the United Nations with the aim of bringing together public and private sector leaders to accelerate action and deliver climate progress- in Baku, the program is focused on advancing the targets set in the Paris Agreement, and Africa is hoping against hope, that finally, the financing deadlock for adaptation will be broken. The focus for the global north has been on mitigation financing, something African leaders and civil society have taken with a pinch of salt.
Simply put, the global north utilized fossils to develop. Some still do. Yet, asking Africa and the larger global south not to, and instead focus on mitigating effects of climate change. Whatever the case maybe, the financing gap keeps widening with little resources advanced through the Nationally Determined Contributions.
So, will COP 29 successfully design an inclusive energy transition?
Innovative solutions to the challenges of climate finance, adaptation and resilience, nationally determined contributions, and Article 6 of the Paris Agreement are desperately needed.
My latest podcast documentary for the BBC World Service’s Business Daily Podcast, looks at how ingenious entrepreneurs are trying to make a mark. It looks at how water hyacinth, an invasive species choking Kenya’s Lake Naivasha, is being harvested and processed to create sustainable materials, transforming lives in the process.
It is the story of how a young climate-tech entrepreneur is fighting plastic pollution by employing fishermen to harvest the invasive hyacinth plant that’s choking Kenya’s lakes. #ClimateAction#COP29#InvestNowhttps://lnkd.in/d4Gp7r7p

Next week, we have our second episode with Palestinian peace practitioner Mohammad Darawshe focusing on building peace, piece by piece.
