“Gareth’s in touch with the outside. He's a lovely lad. [Our call is] a high point in the week.” Steve signed up for Age UK’s Telephone Friendship Service after his mobility problems left him feeling increasingly cut off from the outside world. He was paired with Gareth, a volunteer who calls every week for a chat. Calls from volunteers are especially important around the festive period when loneliness can feel unbearable for older people. To celebrate #NationalOlderWorkersWeek, our Older Worker's Group hosted an event focused on #AgeDiversity in the workplace. We were delighted to hear from Mike D., Age UK Trustee, who discussed ageing in the workplace, the incredible value that older workers bring, and how to manage the transition from work to retirement. We also welcomed Heather Osborne, CEO of Age UK Shropshire Telford & Wrekin, who shared her insights on the experiences of WASPI women, the importance of retirement planning, the challenges of keeping up with workplace technology, and the pressures of the ‘sandwich generation’ balancing care for children and parents. A big thank you to our speakers for joining the event and sharing their expertise with Age UK colleagues, helping us explore how we can celebrate and support older workers in the workplace. "Many [older people] are forced to choose between heating their homes and having a hot meal. We are deeply grateful to the Rothesay Foundation for its generosity and unwavering commitment to improving the lives of older people." Paul Farmer, Age UK's Chief Executive We are delighted to announce that the Rothesay Foundation are donating £2.47 million to help support our benefits service for older people in need this winter With the additional funding from the Rothesay Foundation, 11 local Age UKs will provide dedicated staff to help older people complete the benefits application forms.
