This upcoming #InternationalWomensDay, the UN theme is "For ALL women and girls: Rights. Equality. Empowerment". But are your activities & conversations age-inclusive; and do they explore age themes?🤔 Because, for ALL women to be empowered, ALL ages must be too. Gendered ageism - the intersectionality between ageism and sexism - means women do experience unique and different challenges when it comes to ageing*. So it's vital this is considered, included, and discussed when advocating for the equality of women & gender balance. From the workplace, to healthcare, to our home & personal lives... gendered ageism results in a woman’s value being constantly assessed and judged based on her age. From her looks, to her perceived ‘biological clock’, to menopause, a woman is subjected to ageist attitudes, assumptions and stereotypes on a daily basis. And the numbers don't lie: 💡88% of women aged 59-64 report encountering gendered ageism, primarily due to a perceived decline in their relevance, competence, and overall value in the workplace and/or society (Out-Wit Inc) 💡Women aged 55-64 earn 22% less a week than their male peers - the biggest of all the gender pay gaps (Centre for American Progress) 💡 Pension payments to women aged 65+ are 25% less than for men (OECD) And it isn't just women who are older: 🗣️ 80% of ALL women between 18 - 70 have experienced gendered ageism (Out-Wit Inc) 🗣️ 59% of women under 30 say they've experienced ageism (McKinsey & Company and Leanin.org) 🗣️ 77% of women under the age of 35 felt they had experienced gendered ageism largely because they ‘looked too young’ (Out Wit Inc) And yet so many #IWD activities, panels and events still alienate different ages, and don't explore the challenges we ALL face as women ageing in an ageist world. We must have age-inclusive intergenerational conversations that connect with, and unite, all ages, whilst also understanding and exploring the nuances, challenges and experiences that different life stages can bring. So this International Women's Day 2025, don't let age be a blind spot. I wasn’t even thinking about having a career; all I could focus on was the fact that I’ve got this small child who I needed to look after and provide for. Now I have 3 kids, I’ve been divorced, I’ve become a grandma for the first time recently, and I wish I’d known more about money when I was younger as I didn’t really understand what I should be doing with it, and I still don’t have a nest egg. But it’s ok.
