Let’s do things differently. When I was asked to give comment on the budget yesterday, I immediately thought of my recent trip back to the southwest of England to visit my parents. What I saw again was the endless sprawl of developer housing that has appeared over the last few years. With no sense of identity, dominated by cars and with no amenities within walking distance - this influx of new residents seemingly also hasn't done much to reinvigorate an ailing high street. Indeed, it would be fair to support the cries of the people that say that the countryside is being built over, in a nonsensical pursuit of low-rise, detached homes which make no sense when assessed against the types of gentle density we should be building to create sustainable neighbourhoods of the future. While it is great to hear that the government has finally taken notice of the housing crisis that is troubling the UK and is making provisions for more housing investment – particularly affordable housing, where and how you build is equally important. We decided to set up shop. While markets, cafes and restaurants come and go, the high street itself appeared to be an immutable institution until the rise of online shopping and same day deliveries has made it less varied and vital. A few months ago, we signed a long lease on a space on Hackney Road that was at one time London’s oldest ironmongers and after that the wonderful Conservatory Archives. After three years on the second floor of a shared workspace building, the objective was to be a part of the life of the street, to contribute and benefit from it in equal measure. Last week we finally moved in. It’s been quite an interesting experience and already we’ve had: ✅ Someone wanting a coffee (totally fair, as our espresso machine is on full display) ✅ Someone that wanted to make us some coffee cups. ✅ Someone asking us to design their kitchen. ✅ Someone selling us contraband cigarettes. ✅ Someone offering to clean our windows. ✅ Lots of people saying hi, asking what we do, welcoming us to the neighbourhood. We look forward to welcoming our friends, colleagues, and clients (and passersby) and soon hosting collaborations with people we admire and who could use a big, busy shopfront. #shop #highstreet #architecture #hackneyroad #towerhamlets

New feature in the Architects’ Journal !
We were really happy to open our copy of the Architects’ Journal this month and see our recently submitted scheme for Folkestone Harbour featured in a striking double page spread. We have the privilege of playing a big, ongoing part in the regeneration of the harbour and seafront in Folkestone which in itself is part of a larger coastal renaissance going on all around Britain. With the right level of investment in infrastructure and transport the coast can again foster thriving, healthy and sustainable communities like nowhere else in the country. The Times has realized what we knew already: there's a coastal renaissance unfolding and we are very excited to be a part of it!
We at A IS FOR _____ are extremely proud of Folkestone being named "Best Place to Live" in the South East by The Times. As Tim Palmer put it, this is in no small part due to Sir Roger De Haan's vision and tireless commitment to his hometown. But that wouldn't be enough without the equally important vision and commitment of the creatives, entrepreneurs, public sector workers, charities and civic groups I've come across in the last 8 years spent working almost exclusively on Folkestone's regeneration. They are the ones that will make sure there is an equitable and sustainable future for the town. May Folkestone be a great place to live for many more years to come! #Folkestone #BestPlaceToLive #SouthEast #CommunityPride #LocalHeroes #Regeneration #SustainableFuture #Gratitude #Visionaries #CommunityDevelopment #FolkestoneRegeneration

Our very own Janine Antoine has recently become a fully qualified Architect having received her RIBA Part III qualification from the University of Westminster. Janine went through the process with the same diligence and perfectionism that she applies to her work in the office, so the outcome was never in doubt... Huge congrats from all of us A IS FOR _____ !

We're really happy to have submitted a planning application for The Princess Royal pub renovation and extension in Folkestone, UK. It's our first retrofit project and with it we hope to improve the building's fabric and to bring back this centre of community life. More images and drawings in the coming days, but in the meantime check out the latest on Instagram below.

The site of The Princess Royal has been occupied by different public houses since 1845 when it was called the” Engine Inn”. It stopped trading and was sold in 2015 and in the last few years had become severely dilapidated. The des
