  • Check out this amazing species, the Madras Hedgehog! Yesterday we began working with Brawin Kumar and his team to develop a long-term strategic plan for the Madras Hedgehog Conservation Project, thanks to generous support from People's Trust for Endangered Species. We will be working together over the next two months to apply the #ConservationStandards to the project, which is dedicated to safeguarding the rare Madras Hedgehog in Tamil Nadu's semi-arid regions in close collaboration with local communities.

🐢 Recovering Asian Giant Tortoise 🐢   Hey LinkedIn friends. Today we are going to highlight our next Adaptive Management Circle winner – Sushmita Kar and her incredible conservation project in the biodiversity-rich Indo-Myanmar hotspot of Northeast India! 📢   🌳 Project Highlights:   🐢 Conservation Breeding: Over 100 head-started individuals have been bred at the Nagaland Zoological Park, thanks to a partnership with Turtle Survival Alliance Foundation India. 🐢 Field Research: Sushmita's team has been exploring the remote forests of Wokha and Intanki National Park to locate surviving populations and assess reintroduction sites. 🐢 Community Engagement: With a participatory approach, they've engaged local ethnic communities, raising awareness and securing commitments to protect tortoise habitats. 🐢 Re-wilding Success: In December 2022, ten radio-tagged captive-bred tortoises were successfully released into Intanki National Park, marking the first monitored release of the species in India. 🐢 Future Conservation: The team are currently surveying the remote forests of Wokha, Peren and Zunheboto to locate surviving populations and assess reintroduction sites and have prioritized forests under community's leadership this time. They are in process to select the best site/village and communities will be trained and sensitized to provide protection to the reintroduced tortoises in the long run. Let's cheer Sushmita and her team on and support this vital work. 👏 Stay tuned for more updates from this inspiring project 🌿
