Today is #WorldDiabetesDay. It is observed annually on the birthday of Sir Frederick Banting who co-discovered insulin, along with Charles Best in 1922. Diabetes is a chronic metabolic disease that occurs either when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin, a peptide hormone that regulates blood glucose levels, or when the body cannot effectively use the insulin it produces. In the UK, over 90% of all adults affected with diabetes have type 2 diabetes. Over time, it can lead to serious damage to the heart, blood vessels, eyes, kidneys and nerves. Since the discovery of insulin, peptide therapeutics have gained significant attention in the field of diabetes research due to their potential to address specific targets and modulate biological pathways associated with the disease.
