About us
The Anglo-Argentine Society was founded in 1948. It is a Charity registered in the United Kingdom, and its main objective is to promote cultural relations between Great Britain and Argentina and to build strong social and creative ties between the two communities. The Society also raises money to support selected charities in Argentina. The Society is open to everyone who has a passion for Argentina regardless of his or her socio-economic status, age, ideology, gender, political inclination, or faith. To achieve the Society’s mission, we organise events to cater for the full spectrum of members and their families and friends. The Society offers something to everyone: the annual highpoints are the popular Gran Asado Argentino, our monthly book club Leyendo Argentina, the Gala dinner, the Borges Lecture, the Christmas Party, plus a programme of concerts and lectures and much more. We are a society entirely run by volunteers. Please contact the Society if you would like to offer your time and help with events and projects, or to join our lively and very active committee.

The Anglo-Argentine Society’s 77th Annual General Meeting took place on Thursday 21 November 2024, at the Embassy Of Argentina’s Salón Sarmiento, to report on the finances and activities between 1 September 2023 and 31 August 2024. It was attended by more than 20 members among which there were 6 former chairmen/women, now vice-presidents of our charity. Chairwoman Fátima Nollén-Reardon was elected to continue leading the society for a fourth year. Federico Cincotta and Mario Mansilla were voted back into the committee, while Clorrie Yeomans and Lucia Sarmiento, co-opted members, were voted full members. Ed Cousins presented his apologies due to new commitments, standing down from the committee. This meeting was very productive and is a healthy exercise of governance. It was great to see many new faces too. We all enjoyed empanadas and wine and great conversations to wrap up a year which saw 11 events in 12 months. We are now considering proposals from candidates to join the committee and eventually choose a much needed new treasurer. A small exhibition of documents and gifts belonging to the Society was shown to bring a sense of history and pride for everything achieved in 76 years since its foundation. Many thanks to Professor Ben Bollig from the University of Oxford for participating in our 27th Borges Lecture, bringing us the most interesting research on the Legacy of Borges in contemporary Argentine writers. “Borges, Bosch and Spregelburd: Visions of Inferno”, was a clever, very engaging analysis of how Borges is present in Spregelburd’s play Inferno, which in turn, is one of 7 plays inspired on Hyeronymous Bosch’s painting The Seven Deadly Sins. A true journey into how the arts cross each other and artists impact on other people’s work. Ben Bollig is professor of Latin American Literature and Film. Fellow and Tutor in Spanish at St Catherine’s. Associate Lecturer at St John’s. He translated many Argentine poets into English and wrote many books such as Moving Verses, a study of the cinematic adaptation of poetry in Argentina, and Politics and Public Space in Contemporary Argentine Poetry: The Lyric and the State. He is an editor of Journal of LatinAmerican Cultural Studies and a trustee of the Modern Humanities Research Association. Chairwoman Fátima Nollén, following on the AAS tradition, offered professor Bollig an Honorary Membership, which was accepted. The Borges Lectures started in 1983, when Jorge Luis Borges accepted to give a talk to the Society. #AAS #borgeslecture #argentina #borges #uk #Spregelburd With thanks to Embassy of Argentina in the UK for their continued support of our work.
