While the U.S. plays a pivotal role in global climate efforts, substantial progress is being made worldwide without them: 🇪🇺 The EU has committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by at least 55% below 1990 levels by 2030 and aims for net-zero emissions by 2050. In February 2024, the European Commission proposed a 2040 target of a 90% net GHG emissions reduction below 1990 levels. - Climate Action Tracker 🇨🇳 China has significantly advanced its green transition, rapidly expanding renewable energy capacity. By 2024, it had already reached its 2030 target of 1,200 gigawatts of installed solar and wind capacity six years ahead of schedule. To efficiently distribute this renewable energy, China plans to invest approximately $800 billion by 2030 to modernise its transmission grid. - Financial Times 🇨🇷 Costa Rica has set ambitious climate goals, including a target of net-zero emissions by 2050. The country's National Decarbonisation Plan outlines strategies across all sectors, such as electrifying public transport and implementing energy efficiency measures in industry and buildings. 🚨 BREAKING: Sustainability Reporting has not SUDDENLY become complicated. 🚨 I've been diving into this "periodic table of sustainability reporting" from 2degrees (now Manufacture 2030 | M2030) over the past week, after seeing it reposted by another sustainability professional who claimed sustainability reporting has become overly complex. Curious about its origins, I could only trace it back to a repost from 2015 on Blue & Green Tomorrow's website —so it's at least 9 years old. And guess what? It still captures everything (and more) that I guide my start-up clients through when developing their sustainability strategies and reports. Sustainability reporting isn't a new concept; it's just a hot topic right now. Being a teenager in 2006, when 'An Inconvenient Truth' hit the screens, I often wonder how Al Gore feels about the glacial pace of progress in putting sustainability in the spotlight (since talking about it since the 70's). Now, it's finally here.
