We conduct audio and psychoacoustic engineering research and make next-generation audio tools.
About us
We are a multidisciplinary team of psychoacoustics researchers, digital audio signal processing engineers, sound engineers and music producers, based in the School of Computing and Engineering of the University of Huddersfield, UK. The lab was established by Dr Hyunkook Lee, a leading expert in spatial audio and psychoacoustic engineering, in 2013, with a vision to enhance the quality of audio experience in people's life by bridging the gap between fundamental psychoacoustics and audio engineering. We conduct world-leading research in various areas of psychoacoustic engineering, including 3D audio perception, recording and reproduction, binaural audio rendering with virtual acoustic simulation, perceptual modelling of spatial and timbral auditory attributes and spatial audio sonification. The academic and industrial impacts of our research were considered “world-leading” in the Research Excellence Framework 2021, the UK’s system for assessing the excellence of research in UK Universities. We offer a 3D audio solution named ASPEN™ (APL Spatial Audio Engine), which is a framework for immersive 3D audio content creation and reproduction. It provides the user with the most realistic and natural sense of auditory presence in binaural and multichannel listening environments. Its advanced virtual acoustic simulation technology enables high-quality immersive audio experience for music, film, games, extended reality (XR)/metaverse, automotive audio and many other applications. We are also passionate about bringing good things we found and developed from our research into the real world as accessible software products using our extensive experiences in sound engineering and signal processing. Check out our first commercial audio plugin/app VIRTUOSO powered by ASPEN™, the most natural and realistic-sounding binaural translation tool for stereo and multichannel audio.

We are delighted to see the great review of VIRTUOSO V2 by Mark Gittins on PRODUCTION EXPERT. Thank you! "Virtuoso 2.0 is a stellar update to an already indispensable tool. The integration of Audeze Maxwell support with head tracking elevates the immersive mixing experience to new heights. The standalone WAV/ADM player is incredibly practical for playback and QC tasks, addressing one of the key challenges in immersive mixing." VIRTUOSO is currently on Black Friday Sale (up to 67%) - ends Dec 2nd.

New York felt more immersive last week with the 157th Audio Engineering Society Convention. We proudly launched VIRTUOSO v2 on the opening day of the event. It was fantastic to see so many visitors at our booth, impressed by the latest features of v2. Our collaboration with Audeze, integrating the headtracking capabilities of the Maxwell headset, allowed us to showcase the full potential of headtracked binaural audio. Dale Johnson and Mark Wendl did an outstanding job expertly explaining and demonstrating VIRTUOSO to a continuous stream of attendees throughout the three-day event. APL’s PhD student, Christal Jerez, presented her second paper from her PhD research on immersive melodic hip hop production. Hyunkook Lee had the pleasure of doing a joint session with Bob Katz in the Genelec immersive room, where they explored different immersive sound production techniques. He also presented a paper on narrative engagement in immersive audio, co-authored with Katarzyna Sochaczewska and Christopher Dewey, and moderated a distinguished panel on binaural audio, featuring industry leaders Morten Lindberg, Andrew Scheps, Bob Katz and Justin Gray. #AES #immersiveaudio #binauralaudio #APL #HuddersfieldUni

The first part of Alan Pawlak's PhD work has been published in IEEE/ACM Transactions of Audio, Speech and Language Processing. This paper describes comprehensive evaluations of different spatial synthesis methods for the binaural auralisation of an immersive speaker setup in a critical listening room.
PhD Candidate | Software Developer | Spatial Audio and Binaural Rendering | C++, Python, MATLAB and R
Our recent paper, "Spatial Analysis and Synthesis Methods: Subjective and Objective Evaluations Using Various Microphone Arrays in the Auralization of a Critical Listening Room," has been accepted for publication in IEEE/ACM Transactions on Audio, Speech, and Language Processing and is now available in IEEE Xplore. Early in my PhD research, it became clear that parametric sound field reproduction methods are promising candidates for use in perceptual research of room reflections. In the past, acoustic simulations were often used for this purpose; however, some studies showed that simulations often differ from actual measurements. Conversely, parametric methods produce auralizations based on prior analysis of the sound field. However, the lack of comprehensive comparison of different methods and their configurations, especially using real-world environments and arrays in small spaces like critical listening rooms, necessitated the further research presented in this article. I would like to thank my co-authors, Hyunkook Lee, Aki Mäkivirta, and Thomas Lund, for all their support, as well as all the subjects who participated in both versions of this experiment: the early version conducted remotely during COVID-19 and the refined version conducted post-COVID, which is presented in this paper. The paper is available as open access and includes supplementary material, which will soon be available on the IEEE website. Lastly, I extend my gratitude to Genelec and the The University of Huddersfield for sponsoring this work.

Applied Psychoacoustics Lab (APL) reposted this
And here is another immersive audio recording walk-through. This one aimed at pop/rock/country/indie recording in a commercial studio. It’s possibly the unveiling of the Fajnor-Wendl technique as designed by Juraj Fajnor and myself. It’s still all a work in progress but I’m liking where it’s at. In this video I walk through how the array sounds across different virtual speakers using Virtuoso by the Applied Psychoacoustics Lab (APL) as well as comparing it to the Dolby Atmos binaural sound and a stereo fold down. The array uses a slightly modified rear half of ESMA-3D as designed by Professor Hyunkook Lee and then a stacked pair of stereo recording techniques at the front. The stacked stereo was worked out using the MARSS tool to give great representation of an image in the front and front heights (be aware that fronts have a 60 degree spread and front heights have a 90 degree spread). This was all recorded and developed at The University of Huddersfield and wouldn’t be possible without the great assistant work from Paulius Levickas and Max Mason. Also thanks to Dr Andrew Bourbon, Hans-Martin Buff, Stefan Bock, Jerome Renard and Christal Jerez for the continued discussions and inspiration around immersive audio.

CanJam London was a huge success for us. Not only did so many people visit us and were impressed with VIRTUOSO's binaural rendering quality, but we also met some of the best DAC/headphone amp designers in the hi-fi audio industry and discussed potential collaboration. It was also great that we got to try some new high-end headphones and amps that sounded so amazing. Thanks to head-fi.org for hosting such a great event and accommodating us. We will definitely come back next year. #aplvirtuoso #binauralaudio #headphones #immersiveaudio

Recently, legendary mastering/mixing engineer Bob Katz has been working on an immersive audio project using VIRTUOSO and has kindly shared his experience with us. We are so delighted to receive such positive feedback from him. "I absolutely recommend Virtuoso for mixing engineers who do not have a good listening room." "Using Virtuoso…I got a sense of height and rear localization which is far better than other binaural systems I have tried." Read the full story below.
