Imagine being told that, starting today, you’ll work for free until the end of the year. How would you feel? Today is #DisabilityPayGapDay in the UK, highlighting a serious inequity. Disabled people, on average, earnt £3,460 less per year in 2023 (£4,300 in 2024) than non-disabled colleagues, which equates to working the last 47 working days of the year unpaid. And it’s not just about wages. Disabled people are nearly twice as likely to be unemployed compared to non-disabled individuals, with the employment rate for disabled people at 53% versus 82% for non-disabled people. For impairment-specific groups, such as those with learning disabilities or people who are blind or visually impaired, the unemployment gap is even larger. So, what can we do to close this gap? Here are some steps to consider: - Transparency: Requiring employers to publish disability pay gap data helps bring issues to light and encourages change. - Accessible recruitment: Streamlined and inclusive hiring processes make applying for jobs more equitable. - Better adjustment processes: Simplifying workplace adjustments ensures that disabled employees receive the support they need to succeed. - Progression monitoring: Regularly tracking career progression helps identify and eliminate barriers to advancement. It’s time to address these disparities head-on and build a workforce where disabled employees are supported, paid fairly, and given the same opportunities as everyone else. [post edit: since publication i've actually found out the pay gap figure for this year is even worse than the one quote above. The most recent data lists disabled people earning £4,300 less than non-disabled people in 2024. Source: https://lnkd.in/emvMqGr3.] ID: a Robbie Crow infographic with a dark purple background and light-colored text. At the top, it reads "Disability Pay Gap Day" followed by "Thursday, 7 November 2024." Below, there is a pound symbol inside a circle, next to the text stating, "Disabled people earn an average of £3,460 less than non-disabled people, annually." Further down, it mentions, "From 7 November, disabled people effectively work unpaid for 47 days of the year," with the number "47" inside a circle. The graphic continues with a bar chart icon and states, "Only 53% of disabled people are employed, versus 82% of non-disabled. A 29% disability employment gap." At the bottom, it says, "It’s time to close the disability employment and pay gaps”. #DisabilityPayGap #EquityInEmployment #DisabilityInclusion #Disability #Adjustments #DiversityAndInclusion #Content

Over 180,000 people deal with visual impairment in Scotland, a fact which is rarely thought about or discussed” said Creative Director Kirin Saeed. VICS are combining these two facts and exploring death through the lens of visual impairment in their new production “Sense of Loss”.
