It is with huge sadness that we share the news of the recent death of Paul Murphy. A stalwart of Architects for Health for many years, he was an active, thoughtful and eternally cheerful member of the Executive Committee, holding the post of Secretary from 2010 to 2020. His contribution to the Student Design Awards in particular, was exceptional. He was always on hand to help, inspire and educate the next generation of healthcare architects. Reflecting on Paul's contribution, AfH Chair Jaime Bishop said: "Paul has been a constant presence in the Architects for Health ranks since I joined in the mid-2000's; always charming, ever curious, thoughtful, and life loving. These qualities, which he possessed in abundance, were reflected in his architecture, equally elegant and clever, despite the often clunky and technically demanding nature of the sector. His unwavering commitment to our shared causes, whether as an executive member, secretary, or more recently as an exemplary and engaged member, has left a lasting impact. Beyond all of this, Paul was a friend—warm, generous, and supportive. Architects for Health owes Paul a great debt, and I'm sure I speak for many of our members when I say he will be deeply and dearly missed." Friends and colleagues at Avanti Architects added: "Paul was a much loved member of the Avanti family – a born talent who excelled in every aspect of an architect's craft. His death is a devastating loss, not only to our practice but to the profession as a whole. He will be long and fondly remembered for his warmth and humour and we send our heart-felt condolences to his family and his many friends." We will all miss Paul greatly and our thoughts go to his wife Fiona and daughters Elizabeth and Aoife. // Image courtesy of Joe Duggan

What a brilliant end to the AfH year with our last in-person event of 2024 - our much loved 20x2 event kindly sponsored and hosted by Tarkett. A packed room of AfH members were treated to a high quality (and highly entertaining) series of 2-minute presentations, where ponies, patient feedback, triangles, squares and even sea-shanty’s featured! Congratulations to our winners, Charlotte Anderson and Callum Hay-Montier from KwickScreen and joint runners up, Sophie Crocker, ARB, EDAC, WELL AP and Denise Cloutt. With only one point in it - it was a closely fought battle and the audience found it tough to pick a favourite! Huge thanks to Belén Francos for hosting and Elly Williams for the excellent timekeeping. Connor Holloway, Shaz Hawkins, William DRINKWATER and the rest of the team - thank you for your hospitality and hard work ensuring the event ran smoothly. #architectsforhealth

Huge thanks to everyone who contributed to the Architects for Health Networking Area, Stand and Member Gallery at this years' IHEEM (The Institute of Healthcare Engineering and Estate Management) Healthcare Estates 2024 - 8th and 9th October - Manchester Central. It was - quite literally - bigger and better than ever! AfH exists to bridge the gap between academia, architecture and the NHS and our 750 strong membership represents virtually every discipline working in healthcare design, with the client - and the patient- at the very heart. This year's talks and gallery showcased some incredible work being delivered, in construction and on the drawing board, and it's a pleasure to share our members showcase here, so you can see it one more time. We are hoping to share more presentation resources with AfH #Members via the website in the coming days, so watch this space!

Day 1 of the IHEEM (The Institute of Healthcare Engineering and Estate Management) #HCEstates2024 event went like a flash! Thrilled with how popular the new AfH Networking Area was, with our lunch & learn event playing to a packed crowd. Our MIND and MEND Stream talks were equally popular in the Design and Contractors Theatre (standing room only) - plus some great engagement with members and NHS Trusts who can now join AfH for free! If you’re attending today, do come and see us at Stand H1 and enjoy the brilliant showcase of healthcare work on offer this year. You can also join our MEND Stream session, hosted by Caroline Mulholland and lunch & learn talks from Medical Architecture, SDS and Hannah Chamberlain FRSA of the Design in Mental Health Network. Jaime Bishop will be steering the conversation. Huge thanks to our vibrant membership for their continued commitment and contribution, and to our wonderful stand sponsor, Health Spaces and Networking Area sponsor, Specialist Door Solutions Ltd for making it possible. Lastly, a big thank you to long term supporters, Teal HealthCare for kitting out our new networking area with sofas - they’ll be a very welcome comfy chair today we’re sure!
