When the Global Center for Good Governance in Tobacco Control asked us to contribute our experience with tobacco industry interference in Scotland and showcase how the Global Tobacco Industry Interference Index is a helpful tool in measuring this interference, we were delighted to film this short clip for them. Watch our CEO Sheila Duffy explain how Scotland has taken measures to restrict ways Big Tobacco can influence our health policies.
🏴 Scotland's tobacco control policy has taken a significant step forward by formally recognizing the nicotine industry as part of the Tobacco Industry—an approach yet to be adopted in the rest of the UK. In her video, Shiela Duffy, Chief Executive at ASH Scotland, highlights how GTI’s recommendations played a pivotal role in mobilizing policymakers, the challenges they faced, and actionable strategies for success. 📄 📹 Watch now: https://lnkd.in/gkfHed_a

We thank all 415 cross party MPs who voted overwhelmingly in favour of the #TobaccoAndVapesBill after its second reading in the House of Commons this evening, as we look forward to its proposed strong measures making further progress through Westminster and Holyrood to reduce use of tobacco, protect children and vulnerable people from the harms of second-hand smoke and tackle youth vaping. New analysis by Cancer Research UK (CRUK) has revealed smoking will cause around 29,400 cancer cases in Scotland over the next five years if trends continue. Our CEO Sheila Duffy shares her concerns "CRUK’s estimates about the number of lives being lost to smoking-related cancers demonstrates why MPs representing constituents across the country must support the Tobacco and Vapes Bill’s strong measures to continue driving down use of tobacco – the biggest preventable killer in Scotland."

Our CEO, Sheila Duffy, was interviewed on BBC Scotland's The Nine programme last night to give ASH Scotland's reaction to NHS England's announcement that a generic varenicline product will be available as a prescription only medicine for people in England who would may wish to use it in quit smoking attempts. Although the vast majority of people in Scotland who have recently successfully given up smoking didn’t use anything to aid their quit attempts and around a quarter used Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT), varenicline was a very effective quit smoking medicine when it was previously available. Unlike vapes, varenicline has been approved as safe by the Medicines Health and Regulatory Authority (MHRA) and ASH Scotland supports its use as a medically licensed quit smoking aid which is tested and monitored, quality-controlled and medicinally supervised under a doctor’s advice. ASH Scotland advocates that people in Scotland looking for support to quit tobacco should contact NHS Scotland’s Quit Your Way service to receive free person-centred specialist information and advice delivered by qualified health professionals. Call Quit Your Way on the free helpline on 0800 848484 or create a quit plan at www.quityourway.scot #Scotland #QuitYourWay #QuitYourWayScotland #StopSmoking #QuitSmoking #TobaccoFree #NHS #Health

Following the 2023 Scottish Health Survey figures published today showing a stagnation in the decreasing trend of Scotland’s national smoking rate and suggesting a widening of the smoking inequalities gap between the country’s most and least deprived communities, we are urging elected representatives at Westminster and Holyrood to ensure robust measures in the recently introduced Tobacco and Vapes Bill are rapidly implemented.
