📉 Why does enthusiasm for maths often dip in Year 7? We had a great time at the Harris Federation Conference last week, where we shared research on why high-attaining pupils are twice as likely to say maths is boring as they move into Year 7. So how can we help? One approach is maths circles. These groups bring pupils together with a mentor to explore rich mathematical problems. Around 3 in 4 of our pupils agree they feel more confident in their maths classes after taking part. 🌟One pupil put it best: “I used to hate getting stuck before I joined Axiom Maths, I sometimes used to cry but now I realise you won't be a true mathematician without getting stuck.” If you’re interested in our research, you can find out more by clicking the link in the comments. #MathsEducation #STEM

As half term is in full swing, it’s the perfect moment to reflect: How do we create a maths circle culture that keeps pupils engaged and coming back? Our mentors do an incredible job and know that success is not just problem solving - it is about belonging, confidence and motivation. Here’s what is working: 🟦 Team effort: consider ways to celebrate pupil success and structure pair or group activities. 🟦 Boost pupil self-esteem: reassure pupils that ‘getting stuck’ is a crucial part of being a mathematician and that effort > outcome in our eyes. 🟦 Engage parents and carers: one positive communication home each month can make all the difference. 🟦 Recognise achievement: Recognition systems or rewards for completing blocks like badges or water bottles go far.
