In this short video, Dr. Tahir Zaman reflects on the evolving role of the humanitarian sector. While immediate aid is critical, over time, displaced individuals often take their own initiative—migrating to cities, finding work, and building new opportunities for transformation. This perspective aligns with the working paper, "Social Assistance and Coping With Crises in Borno, Nigeria," authored by Vidya Diwakar, Adedeji Adeniran, Emmanuel Nwosu, Fidelis Obaniyi, Chisom Udora The paper reveals that only 10% of households in conflict-affected Borno receive social assistance, leading many to adopt independent strategies, such as urban migration, to combat poverty and food insecurity. 🌍 𝐊𝐞𝐲 𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬: • Limited social assistance in Borno forces many households to rely on migration and informal coping strategies. • Current humanitarian efforts often neglect long-term needs, leaving gaps in economic and social support. • Expanding targeted social assistance and economic opportunities is crucial for building resilience and reducing reliance on negative coping mechanisms. 🔗Read the working paper: https://lnkd.in/dxeR6uXd #SocialAssistance #UrbanIntegration #ProtractedCrises #BasicResearch

Research Services
A research programme examining why, how and when to use social protection approaches in different crisis contexts.
About us
In crisis settings, how can international, national and local actors work together to strengthen commitments and effectively, efficiently and sustainably provide social assistance to those in need? BASIC (Better Assistance in Crises) Research is a FCDO funded programme examining why, how and when to use social protection approaches in different crisis contexts, to deliver more effective social assistance so that vulnerable people cope better with crises and meet their basic needs. Ultimately, BASIC Research aims to generate evidence and fresh perspectives on how to strengthen social assistance in the most difficult protracted crisis settings and for the populations that are the hardest to reach. BASIC Research is led by the Institute of Development Studies (IDS) at the University of Sussex together with the School of Global Studies at the University of Sussex, and the Centre for International Development and Training (CIDT) at the University of Wolverhampton, working with an assortment of partners across 11 countries affected by protracted crisis. Deeper research focuses on Lebanon, Niger, Nigeria and Yemen.

Financing mechanisms are key for the effective implementation of universal social protection systems. However, Arab States and International Financial Institutions (IFIs) often avoid these systems, citing complexities and preferring poverty-targeted safety nets funded through loans or grants. This approach leads to debt, austerity, and constrained social spending, alongside conditionalities that can undermine inclusivity and sustainability. Alternative financing options can help avoid these pitfalls, including global social protection funds, taxation, self-financed schemes, debt restructuring, climate finance, and progressive fiscal reforms. Such alternatives support wealth redistribution and sustainable, solidarity-based financing. In response, the Arab Reform Initiative (ARI) is hosting its second Annual Regional Policy Forum, in collaboration with Oxfam in MENA, to discuss financing mechanisms for universal social protection in the Arab region. This event, taking place on November 7th, will gather experts, activists, and policymakers to explore feasible, context-specific alternatives to debt and austerity while drawing on international best practices in social protection financing.
