Lots of fuss made about aluminium and steel, but what does President Trump's announcement on the proposed 25% tariff on Canada (and Mexico) mean for the battery value chain? What's the impact on lithium development projects, graphite, nickel, precursor, CAM, anode? Cells themselves. While it's true that these projects could reorient towards Europe, it's also true that the US is a major potential market for these products. Does this announcement further delay long-overdue capacity announcements in the battery value chain? Can't think it can help. But if you're willing to tariff your neighbours and major trading partners, what does that mean for the rest of the world? Australia, Brazil, Chile...it looks like no-one's going to be exempt. And, of course, the perhaps-unintentional impact of all of this tariffing - raising costs for US industry and the consumer. There's no way most raw and intermediate material producers will be able to afford to absorb the cost of tariffs themselves, so they either don't ship to the US or the end user in the US absorbs the cost. Which means that tariffs will be inflationary for US industry and the US consumer. Is that the look that President-Elect Trump is looking for? I can (just about) understand the strategy of tariffing China, but your major trading partners that you recently signed a trade agreement (USMCA) with? Strange. #lithium #nickel #graphite #anode #cathode #lithiumionbatteries #electricvehicles https://lnkd.in/evFKDXkv

Thanks to Howard Klein and Rodney Hooper for a very enjoyable chat!
🔥 NEW VIDEO 🔥 Are Western Australian spodumene producers (ex-Greenbushes) now the high cost / marginal lithium suppliers? Matt Fernley has made this controversial call following his recent site visit to a number of China’s lithium suppliers. Check out Howard Klein and Rodney Hooper’s latest Rock Stock Channel interview with this renowned equity analyst at Westbeck Capital's Volta Fund, publisher of the Battery Materials Review, and host of the Recharge Podcast. 🔑 Key Highlights: 1. Don’t bet against China – lepidolite and African spodumene seem to mirror China’s disruption of nickel, steel, aluminum sectors; 2. Lithium’s commoditization - overcapacity, China's dominance, but subject to conventional boom/bust commodity cycle dynamics; 3. What is fundamental marginal cost to produce lithium? 4. Bright spot - the rise of extended-range EVs (EREVs) – strong driver in second-tier China cities and large population emerging market countries 5. Will we see lithium price rises to $30,000, $40,000 again? When? 6. Graphite outlook: Why midstream projects are essential to achieving Western independence in the supply chain Video 👉 https://lnkd.in/d_yPgPDE Teaser👇

A bad case of Headinsanditis seems to be affecting the #lithium industry at the moment. Headinsanditis is a dangerous condition where people become unwilling to recognise a problem, situation or a new reality. It’s particularly dangerous when the people suffering from it are people in positions of power or responsibility, like CEOs of public companies, or analysts and industry commentators. #mining #batteries #electricvehicles https://lnkd.in/eJyXyTKv
