With negotiations at #COP29 finalised, what can we make of the progress, or lack thereof, on ensuring that developing countries receive long-term financial support to protect them against the impacts of climate change? 🤔 Read our CEO Anthony Osijo’s insights on this year’s UN Climate Change Conference (COP29) in Baku:
Three things that have made me pause for thought during this year’s climate conference in Baku: 1. Funding to meet the Paris Agreement Goals: To achieve the Paris Agreement targets, UN-appointed experts have stated that $1 trillion USD needs to be directed towards developing countries each year. However, what happened to the Climate Finance Action Fund? It was clearly missing from the agenda on ‘Finance Day’ last Thursday. The launch of this financial mechanism was cancelled – but at what cost? 2. Progress on clean cooking initiatives: Clean cooking was a big topic on the agenda. Last week, the UK’s Minister for Development, Anneliese Dodds, announced support for enabling communities in the Global South to transition away from harmful biomass fuels such as charcoal and wood. The UK has committed £74 million to provide clean cooking access for 10 million people across Sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia, and the Indo-Pacific. This is a promising step forward but is still only £7 per person! 3. Green technologies as a national priority: According to the Global Renewables Alliance (GRA), 10 major economies, including France, Germany, and India, have emphasised that green technologies should be a top priority for national governments. But for these ambitions to be realised, effective and robust implementation is essential. It will be fascinating to see which nation takes the lead in driving this forward and the part that Africa has to play in this. #COP29 #GreenInvestment #PeopleAndPlanet Bboxx, African Development Bank Group, KawiSafi Ventures, InfraCo Africa

🔍 Let’s have a look at What’s #InsideTheBboxx Today 👀📦 Our #CreditScoring model plays a key role in enabling access to essential services and products for households and small businesses across Africa. Here’s how: 💳 Bboxx’s machine learning-based credit scoring creates daily credit scores and insights, helping us build a unique relationship with each customer. 🌍 Credit scores are continuously tracked across markets, adapting to local conditions. For instance, extreme weather events like droughts and floods in Kenya can impact credit scores, and our packages can be adjusted by region to ensure fair pricing based on local credit profiles. 📊 Personalised packages based on credit scores mean that customers get the most affordable outcome and tailored options, empowering more people to benefit from clean energy and other life-changing services. Through these efforts, we not only open doors to vital products and services but also build a foundation for financial inclusion—helping customers build credit histories, access fair pricing, and unlock new opportunities for themselves. 🙌 #InsideTheBboxx #FinancialInclusion #Innovation

After an incredible 10,100 km journey across six countries (a quarter of the Earth’s circumference – or, the distance from Paris to Bangkok!), Greenwheel’s impactful adventure has come to a close with 89 solar home kits installed across Togo and Benin! 🏍️☀️ From 10,100 km traveled, 6 countries crossed, 72 TotalEnergies stations, and 11 garages visited, Greenwheel’s journey reached over 520 individuals and made a lasting impact. In Togo, home solar kits mean children can study in the evenings, parents can continue income-generating activities, and families stay safer at night. In Benin, solar kits enable entrepreneurs—seamstresses, mechanics, shop owners, hairdressers—to extend their work into the evening. Collaborating with Greenwheel to bring solar energy to communities in West Africa and transform lives has been a privilege. Missions like these fuel our commitment to bridge the energy access gap and empower communities even faster! 💡 🌅 Each mile covered and every kit installed is a step closer to universal energy access. We’re immensely grateful for Greenwheel’s dedication to our shared vision and for the support from all contributors on this journey. #TransformingLives #UnlockingPotential #SHS

Standing Together Against Breast Cancer 🎗️ Although Breast Cancer Awareness Month officially concluded in October, the importance of awareness, prevention, and early detection remains year-round. 🎀 For Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Bboxx EDF Togo team organised a special day dedicated to the fight against breast cancer. This week marks the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (#COP29), taking place in Baku, Azerbaijan. This global conference is crucial as it brings world leaders together to discuss initiatives for accelerating the green energy transition. 🌍 By this, we mean the deployment of climate finance to support the transition towards low-carbon energy, which is essential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and limit global warming to 1.5°C. Achieving these goals requires the global financial system to mobilise private sector investments for climate adaptation and mitigation efforts. This is vital for developing countries, which are more vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. Investing in climate resilience is an investment in future generations, especially for communities whose livelihoods are deeply tied to agricultural practices. 🌾 Learn how Bboxx is driving access to technology and financing for millions: https://lnkd.in/eY54A4Ws #ScalingUpClimateFinance

Why is e-mobility a growing necessity for those living in Sub-Saharan Africa? 🤔 By 2050, 950 million people will be living in African cities, and the majority of them will require access to reliable transportation. 🏍️ E-mobility becomes a viable option for those whose livelihoods heavily depend on transportation. Many people require the use of a vehicle to carry out business. E-bikes are known to travel 160-200 km on a single charge, making them highly reliable for urban and peri-urban households. #InsideTheBboxx, today, we wanted to focus on the existing work that we’re doing through our sub-brand, #BboxxRide. Essentially, subject to credit checks, Bboxx customers can sign up for the use of electric motorbikes. Customers can even visit Bboxx outlets to swap their batteries, allowing them to continue their journeys with reliability and efficiency. This process uses the Bboxx PAYGO business model, where customers pay for access to the bikes via mobile money payments. 📱 We’re working together with partners including Ampersand Energy and SPIRO, the first and largest electric vehicle (EV) companies in Africa, and we’ve rolled out a ‘Plug and Play’ EV motorcycle program across Rwanda, Togo, and Kenya. These partnerships mean that Bboxx is a significant player in e-moto financing, empowering tens of thousands of individuals who depend on motorcycles to fuel their livelihoods. 🙌 #CleanMobilityTransition #UrbanTransportation #EmobilityMission
