Youth-centred wellbeing programme in Greater Manchester, Hampshire, IoW, Portsmouth & Southampton.
About us
#BeeWell is a youth-centred programme dedicated to improving the wellbeing of young people across England. #BeeWell listens to the voices of young people through an annual wellbeing survey delivered in secondary schools and builds a coalition of partners to act on the results. The programme is a collaboration between The University of Manchester, The Gregson Family Foundation and Anna Freud, who, together with the Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA), launched the programme in 2019. The programme’s success in Greater Manchester has led to #BeeWell’s expansion into Hampshire, Isle of Wight, Portsmouth and Southampton in 2023 where the programme is directly supported by the region’s four local authorities and Integrated Care System. #BeeWell is committed to making young people’s wellbeing everybody’s business!

"Without wellbeing, we're not going to get academic success" Wellbeing is an essential foundation needed for a young person to achieve academically. John Rowlands, Executive Principal of Greater Manchester Academies Trust and Sue Watmough, Headteacher of Manchester Communication Academy, sat down with #BeeWell Chair and Co-Founder David Gregson to reflect on the value of #BeeWell for schools, and the importance of wellbeing in education. John and Sue reflected that when a young person’s basic needs are not being met, we can’t expect them to come to school and deliver academically. #BeeWell data can help schools to identify opportunities for boosting wellbeing, and evidence the impact of their initiatives, as well as supporting wider improvements across society. Youth steering group members represent #BeeWell at the Fair Education Alliance Youth Summit in London! This October, four young people from our youth steering groups travelled from Greater Manchester and Hampshire to attend the FEA Youth Summit in London - joining 165 other young people to talk about making education more inclusive. The youth summit is a conference designed by and for young people who have faced barriers to education. One of our youth steering group members said: “Attending the Youth Summit 2024 was an incredible experience. The highlight for me was meeting new people. Everyone was not only friendly but also committed to the organisations they were representing.” Read more reflections from the day here: https://lnkd.in/drYg3jS6 #education #inclusiveeducation #youthleadership

Funded PhD opportunity! Supported by The University of Manchester's prestigious Bicentenary Studentships, we are pleasedto be advertising for a four year funded PhD to help generate important new insights into ethnic inequalities in adolescent mental health and wellbeing (MHWB). The successful candidate will carry out interdisciplinary, mixed-methods work consisting of secondary analysis and new data generation to address the following research questions: RQ1: What are the nature and magnitude of ethnic inequalities in MHWB among young people and do they change over time and during adolescence? RQ2: To what extent are experiences of discrimination (including but not limited to racial discrimination) underlying reasons for these inequalities? RQ3: What are ethnic minority young people’s understandings of their MHWB, including why poor MHWB might occur, and how is this related to their experiences of seeking support? The student will make use of existing high-quality survey datasets (e.g., #BeeWell, Evidence for Equality National Survey, Millennium Cohort Study, Understanding Society) as well collecting qualitative data in order to meet the overall aims of the project. Young people performed their hard-hitting play ‘The Wall’ in Southampton on Saturday 🎭 This weekend a VIP audience of local youth groups and community organisations were treated to a special scratch night performance of ‘The Wall’. Young people used #BeeWell data and drew on their own experiences to create the characters and plot for 'The Wall' to help communicate about important issues impacting young people’s wellbeing. This hard-hitting youth-led play was facilitated by Light Up Shirley Ensemble. Southampton’s Councillor Winning said: “They bravely address the struggles our young people are facing today after a sudden and tragic event at their school. Powerful, poignant and beautifully presented!”
