Birmingham Hospice help people from all communities access the care of their choice at the end of life.

About us

Birmingham Hospice is the new name for Birmingham St Mary’s Hospice and John Taylor Hospice. We are the primary provider of adult hospice care in Birmingham, providing expert palliative and end of life care to local people living with terminal diagnosis - at our hospice, in the community, or in their own homes, wherever home may be. We are also here to support families, carers and loved ones through the most difficult times of their lives. All of our services are free of charge to everyone that uses them however, lack of government funding means we are struggling to keep up with spiralling costs, making it harder for us to care for everyone who needs it. This year, we estimate it could cost £20 million to run Birmingham Hospice. 60% of this comes from the NHS, the remaining 40% has to be raised through fundraising activity, income from our shops and voluntary donations. We desperately need your help to provide vital palliative and end of life care in your local community.

🌟 Today, we’d like to thank Ryan Stenson, who has raised an amazing £1,606 for Birmingham Hospice by taking on the Alton Towers Half Marathon in memory of his dad. Ryan shared: "I finished in two hours and nine minutes, which I’m pretty happy with as my goal was to get under two hours and ten minutes — I just made it! Especially considering how hilly it was, people warned me it was a tougher one, but I definitely still underestimated it. Despite getting drenched at the end, it was a great day overall, and I’m glad I could do something to give back to Birmingham Hospice.” 🌟 Thanks also to the Harborne Craft Group, who raised a phenomenal £2,488 from their annual Christmas craft fayre. The morning was a huge success, with homemade gifts and cakes being sold to benefit the hospice. We are so grateful for your support! 🌟 St Dunstan’s 148 Scout Group have donated some preloved toys to help our charity shops stock our shelves just before Christmas. Your kindness and generosity will allow other children to have some lovely gifts, while supporting Birmingham Hospice at the same time. Thank you! 🌟 Thank you also to Emma Thompson, Dorothy and Alan Dews, Demi Underhill, Sarah Hawkesford, Kelly Guest-Summers and Kate Donegan, who have kindly donated toys for the children’s room in our Inpatient Unit. We appreciate this so much – it will make a real difference! Feeling inspired to support us? To find out how you can help, please visit 👉 https://bit.ly/3xXHhPJ #ThankYouThursday

Birmingham Hospice has opened a new therapeutic garden, providing a peaceful and relaxing space to be used by children who are experiencing grief. Over the last few months, the team at the hospice have been working hard to get The Dragonfly Garden ready at its Selly Park site, with the support of generous volunteers and donors. It features a variety of landscaping, including planted and paved areas, a water feature and sculptures, and an activity bench. The hospice’s Children’s Healing and Therapeutic Support (CHATS) Team offers both pre- and post-bereavement support for children and young people when a loved one has died, or is facing a terminal illness. The garden will be a safe space for children to use with our CHATS team to help them talk through their problems and cope with their grief. It has been named the Dragonfly Garden, as dragonflies represent transformation and resilience through times of difficulty, hardship and grief, giving hope for the future. The vision became a reality thanks to the generous support of Danni Swann, who designed the garden with the support of her company Glancy Nicholls Architects, garden landscaper Lee Linden who dated his time and £1,500 to the project and his colleague Mark Wilkes, and Unity Trust Bank whose team volunteered for a week and also donated £2,000. One of the children from the hospice’s Young Person’s Forum spoke about the garden and said: “It’s so peaceful out here, I can’t wait to sit and just think about my dad here. He would have loved this space.”

This week our Children’s Healing and Therapeutic Support (CHATS) Team has been supporting Children’s Grief Awareness Week by #BuildingHope 🙌 Health professionals from across the country joined the CHATS Team to take part in Childhood Grief Training. CHATS developed the course because there was a gap in how bereaved children were being supported. The training ensures those caring for them can access vital resources and strategies which builds their confidence when supporting a child. The training uses a creative approach, designed to help engage children through therapeutic activities with the people they know and trust 🎨 “It was a really fantastic day, which I thoroughly enjoyed and will recommend. The tips and ideas of how to approach situations were invaluable,” commented one participant at this week’s training. CHATS will be holding their next training course on Wednesday 25 January 2025 and a place on it can be booked on Eventbrite. Book here 👉 https://bit.ly/40WxZPW
