Brickmas Countdown Day 10 🎄5 Frederick’s Place A well-deserved winner of the Craftsmanship category, this refurbishment project is a testament to the skill of the bricklayers at Grangewood Brickwork. The meticulous attention to detail is evident in every aspect of the building’s façade, from the careful selection of the clay bricks (Ibstock Plc & York Handmade Brick Co Ltd) to the precise execution of the installation. The Brick Awards entry reveals: "Inspired by the Mercers’ Company origins in textile trading, the textured brickwork on the façade of the archive at No. 5 Frederick’s Place is a ‘woven tapestry’. Selected bricks are projecting and thus emphasise the ‘warp’, while the recessed joints highlight the ‘weft’ in ‘woven’ brickwork draped to the ground. The texture is the most intense at the top and disperses as it drops to the ground to invite visitors into the archive. The tapestry brickwork enhances the building by introducing intricate patterns and textures to its façade. It adds visual interest and depth, making the building more memorable to viewers. The arrangement of bricks creates a dynamic surface that changes character throughout the day. The hand-laid arches below the ‘tapestry’ add further detail to the building’s façade, which when viewed by the public will be more aesthetically pleasing." Brickmas Countdown Day 8 🎄HyBrick Science Museum Bench Thanks to innovative design and great leaps in carbon-cutting firing processes, the HyBrick clay brick bench is a fantastic addition to London Science Museum's Energy Revolution: The Adani Green Energy Gallery. London. BDA member Michelmersh Brick Holdings PLC, has developed Hybrick, the world's first 100% hydrogen fired brick, resulting in 81-84% less carbon emissions. HyBrick is a physical example of how product innovation can create a real solution to the challenges facing the clay brick industry and when combined with wider emission reduction efforts, is a manifestation of the sustainable potential of clay brick. Brickmas Countdown Day 7 🎄 Ice Factory The Ice Factory is another brilliant example of repurposing a 200-year-old clay brick building and giving it a new lease of life that will serve future generations. Its use has changed over the years from being an ice factory, a coachworks, a power station and most recently a garage! BDA member Michelmersh Brick Holdings PLC supplied a variety of clay brick colours for this project which were specified to create a distinction between the old building and new. The Brick Awards entry reveals: "For the new-build extension, the intention was not to copy the existing building, but to remain distinct. There were a number of different bond types in the immediate area (in addition to Flemish), we used stretcher bond to create a simpler and cleaner brickwork pattern within the Conservation Area." Brickmas Countdown Day 6 🎄 - Mulberry Academy London Dock School is nearly out for this year but not for our countdown to Brickmas! Mulberry Academy London Dock is a secondary school built in a dense urban redevelopment of former docks, brick warehouses and Grade Listed buildings in Tower Hamlets featuring BDA members Ibstock Plc's Cooksbridge Yellow Clamp Stock clay brick. We're really loving the Passivhaus design behind this project which overcame numerous challenges to make what we believe should be the blueprint for future schools. The Brick Awards project entry reveals: "In addition to its impressive energy performance, Mulberry London Dock School also showcases a striking architectural design that seamlessly integrates with the aesthetic of the surrounding London Dock development. The carefully selected materials, including the distinctive brick façade, not only contribute to the building’s visual appeal but also play a crucial role in its Passivhaus performance, providing excellent thermal insulation and durability." Brickmas Countdown Day 5 🎄Greenock Ocean Terminal 🛳️ Greenock Ocean Terminal is a striking visitor centre which makes an excellent first impression on arrivals. On a slightly cloudy day, it even looks like clouds of steam are coming from the centres three ship smokestacks. The Brick Awards entry for the project delves into how "the elevations are constructed of Ibstock Plc’s Slate Blue Smooth Blue bricks - a natural choice as they complement the colour of the ocean. Thin single brick lines of sky blue glazed bricks break up the otherwise monolithic slate blue facades and provide additional visual interest." The stunning glazed façade crafted with Ibstock Plc's glazed bricks on Wells Street, or the historic charm from Berners Street where you'll find the historic clay brick façade constructed from Michelmersh Brick Holdings PLC's Charnwood handmade bricks, to match the building's original façade. This commercial building is a wonderful example of blending old and new. Our Brick Awards judges commented: "High quality detailing, materials and design of elevations and internal spaces responding to the two street, and courtyard conditions. Good use of clay brick in various conditions - historic repair, restoration, heritage extension, alongside contemporary. Nicely detailed throughout." Brickmas countdown day 3 🎄Royal Eden Docks Phase 2. The unique design of this large housing development, combined with the high-quality clay bricks from Ibstock Plc, skilfully laid by Swift Brickwork Contractors Ltd resulted in Royal Eden Docks Phase 2 winning the Contractors Choice award. The Brick Awards submission explains how "High-quality clay bricks provide a clean, modern appearance and are laid in a stretcher bond pattern, a classic brickwork technique where the long side (stretcher) of the brick is visible on the face of the wall. This pattern creates a sense of uniformity and simplicity, allowing the inherent beauty of the brickwork to take centre stage."
