  • BASL Board statement Yesterday, Sue Anstiss MBE posted an image of promotional material for our 30th Annual Conference that featured all male panellists. We entirely accept that Sue was right to pick us up on this, that the image reflects poorly on us as an organisation, and that our members and the sports law community (and others) expect better. We hold our hands up and we apologise. Sue is also right to note that there are many, many talented women working in sports law and there are many law firms, barristers’ chambers and other organisations that are doing great things to promote women in sports law, which is helping to improve gender balance and giving women the opportunity to thrive. We want women to know that there are many and growing opportunities for them in the field of sports law and the wider sports industry. Regrettably, the image does not reflect that, the British Association for Sport and Law as an organisation, or what we strive to be. Among other things, our Chair and Vice-Chair are female, we have strong female representation on our Board and every member of our Board is committed to diversity (gender and otherwise). This year’s conference will - as in previous years - feature excellent female panellists (who had not been able to confirm attendance at the time this promotional image was sent out). We would not wish for the image to undermine these things, or the work that we will do to continue to support women in sports law. With that said, we wish to be clear that we are unequivocally accepting the criticism. We will be reflecting on it, learning from it, and seeking to do so in a positive way.
