Our much anticipated research analysing students’ motivations in choosing UK TNE in Greece, Spain and France is out! The study is the first of its kind in relation to student motivation and draws on national and international cohorts. The research offers important insights for the UK Higher Education sector into how students discover, research and decide on TNE options. It sets out recommendations regarding what UK universities can do to strengthen the visibility and marketing of TNE. Great thanks to Ishan Cader for his work on this!

I spoke to the The Guardian earlier this week about the work of the British Council and how we are a key driver of others’ trust in the UK and the UK's soft power. I also spoke about the tough financial challenges we face. The British Council has been mostly self-funded for decades, with less reliance on public funding. Unfortunately, the pandemic knocked a massive hole in our finances. We’ve reorganised and improved our business model, but market forces are making recovery difficult and we need to do further restructuring and cost reductions on our own. We will do that. And we will explore everything else, including asset sales, that can support our finances. However, it also clear that other countries invest much more than the UK in their cultural relations organisations, and we are are looking for some support from the UK government to ensure we don’t lose our ability to have impact as we resturucture. If we do what we need to and get some support from our partners in government, I’m confident that in the future we can return to a strong financial footing and continue with our mission to support peace and prosperity for the UK and millions of people around the world. #BritishCouncil #SoftPower #UKSoftPower #InternationalRelations https://lnkd.in/eyEFdaHf

A huge thank you to Ms Akie Koyama, Head of Education at the British Council Tokyo, for joining us at the 2nd The University of Manchester – The University of Tokyo Symposium last week. Her presence was a strong reminder of the pivotal role funders play in fostering international collaboration—not just by providing financial support, but by actively enabling researchers to connect, exchange ideas, and build meaningful partnerships across borders. With the British Council’s support, I am leading a funded project, SYNERGY-UK & Japan alongside with Charmaine M.S. Ng 吳明珊 メイ, Akilu Yunusa-Kaltungo (PhD CEng FIMechE FHEA) and Tsukasa Ishizawa, which focuses on #Society5.0 in the built environment. This initiative is strengthening the UK-Japan research partnership, particularly with The University of Tokyo and Kyoto Institute of Technology, by fostering collaboration, knowledge exchange, and technological innovation. The project is more than just an academic exercise—it represents a critical step in integrating emerging technologies into our built environment, ensuring that digital transformation aligns with sustainability and societal needs in both countries. International research flourishes when there is a shared vision, sustained commitment, and a platform for collaboration. The British Council has been instrumental in making this a reality, bridging expertise and resources between nations. I look forward to continuing this journey and expanding the impact of UK-Japan partnerships in science, technology, and education. Today is International Day of Women and Girls in Science, a great opportunity to highlight our Women in STEM scholarship programme. Exciting news! The British Council have announced their Online Distance and Digitally Delivered Learning (ODDL) Grant, a key initiative under the Going Global Partnerships programme. This grant fosters collaboration between the UK and India’s education systems, bringing together universities, industry leaders and innovators to harness technology, improve digital learning, and expand access to quality education. I was privileged to host the launch of the British Council’s latest report, "Examining Sustainability of Transnational Education (TNE) Partnerships". The event gathered leading experts and decision-makers to discuss the future of sustainable TNE partnerships and Qatar’s growing role in global higher education. Abdulrahman Jumeh (British Council) presented the research findings, while Nesma Mansour Mostafa (British Council) chaired the panel discussion, leading key conversations on the evolving landscape of transnational education. The session featured key insights from Dr. Hareb Al Jabri (Assistant Undersecretary of Higher Education Affairs, Ministry of Education and Higher Education), Dr. Khalid Al Ali (Ministry of Education and Higher Education Advisor), Dr. Arshad Jamal (Dean of Academic Affairs, Northumbria University), Prof. Gary Bond (Dean, University of Central Lancashire UCLan), and Mr. Brian Buckley Principal of AFG College with the University of Aberdeen.
