Today we welcome five non-executive directors who have joined Great British Energy’s start-up board. Delivering on the government’s Plan for Change and clean energy superpower mission, the new board will set a strategy for how the company will work with the energy sector and communities. Bringing a wide range of experience, the appointees together with Chair Juergen Maier CBE FRS FREng, will help to scale up Great British Energy and build its organisational structure and Aberdeen Headquarters. This will help drive investment in clean energy technologies, create good, skilled jobs and growth across the UK. Meet our non-executive directors: Frances O'Grady Frances was General Secretary for the TUC between 2013 and 2022, as well as former deputy General Secretary from 2003. She is a member of the House of Lords and has previously held positions at the Transport and General Workers Union where she worked on successful campaigns to introduce a national minimum wage and equal pay for women. Frank Mitchell Frank is the former CEO for SP Energy Networks, Chair of Skills Development Scotland and non-executive director of Scottish Rugby Ltd, as well as a member of the Scottish Energy Advisory Board. Frank has worked internationally in the energy sector for 35 years covering generation, transmission and distribution networks, and retail. Kate Gilmartin Kate is the CEO of the British Hydropower Association and has a background in renewable energy and low carbon project development. She was also a founding member and is now a director of the trade body Community Energy England, as well as board member for Rossendale Valley Energy, a Community Benefit Society and also a member of Greater Manchester Community Renewables. Dr Nina Skorupska CBE FEI Nina is the former CEO of the REA: Association for Renewable Energy and Clean Technology. As a chemist by training with over 40 years’ experience in the energy industry, Dr Skorupska has worked in a range of senior executive and board roles at National Power, RWE, Npower and Essent NV. She is a former Board member of Transport for London and a supervisory board member of the Dutch engineering and construction company, Royal BAM NV. Valerie Todd CBE Valerie is a HR professional with extensive experience across the private, public and third sectors. She is the former director of People and Organisation at Siemens plc, and is currently a non-executive director at Digital Catapult.

🌊Continued support of Tidal Range within Parliament🌊 As we approach the end of the 2024 Parliament we are still getting support from across the political spectrum for Tidal Range Hydropower, with Tim Farron, former leader of the Liberal Democrat, pushing for the UK to use its natural Tidal resources to provide Energy Security for the UK. 🌊New Members of the BHA Team!🌊 With the BHA pushing on all fronts this year, we were delighted to bring on two new staff members in October to help with advocacy and to ensure that we give the best possible service to our members! To that end we have brought in Robin Peters and Tim Montagu with a business development and research remit. They will focus on tidal range and pumped storage respectively Robin is an accomplished energy sector executive with a proven track record in developing, leading, and managing high-performing teams across the UK and internationally. Skilled in implementing successful strategies for delivering major energy projects and markets, he is also experienced in driving multi-disciplinary, multicultural teams to achieve business objectives efficiently. Robin is commercially astute, innovation-driven, and focused on seizing opportunities to deliver results. Tim joins the BHA with a range of experience including capital raising for infrastructure projects, ESG research and corporate banking at HSBC. He served in the Royal Navy for 12 years with experience in engineering, intelligence analysis, diplomacy and team training. Tim holds a BSc in Geology, an Executive MBA from LSE and a certificate in project finance from LBS. We are excited to have them on board as we look towards 2025! Glad to hear the Energy Secretary, Ed Miliband MP on Radio 4 this morning providing more detail on how the Government aims to achieve 95% clean power by 2030. The key is to ensure a further scale up of wind is not matched by huge increases in curtailment charges – hence the need to build out sufficient Pumped Storage Hydro. Long duration energy storage is the real solution for clean power so we can store excess renewable energy for when there is a lack of wind and sunshine. There are 11 pumped storage hydropower projects awaiting regulatory support and investment which could add over 10GW and 200GWh of clean power to the UK grid – equivalent to a third of our current total wind capacity. There is a similar scale of tidal range projects in planning – both well-established technologies able to provide decades of clean power and support thousands of jobs. #renewableenergy #cleanpower #hydropower #ukgovernment
