This should be one of the major advantages of The Labour Party government, even if it takes a number of years to implement. A strong, more competitive, British supply of major parts of the value chain. At British Offsite Limited are still using a mix of domestic and international material suppliers, which with the retraction of globalization, is becoming less competitive and harder to manage. Bring on more competitive, greener steel production. There’s no downside.
Today is a hugely important day for our sector as we gather for the Steel Summit in Parliament. In Spring 2025, the UK Government will publish its steel strategy. Today’s event – organised by UK Steel – will help to shape and set out the sector vision of what the strategy can achieve if Government, industry, and trade unions work together in partnership to: 1. Deliver a competitive business landscape to attract additional investment in the sector 2. Level the playing field to give industry a fair chance to gain market share 3. Deliver a strategic expansion of steelmaking capacity and capability. The UK needs a strong and vibrant steel industry and British Steel plans to be at the centre of it – ensuring the UK’s infrastructure needs are met. We are the UK’s only manufacturer of rail and heavy sections for construction, and our highly-skilled colleagues also excel in making wire rod and special profiles. Not that I subscribe to a lot of doomsaying, but it’s becoming more undeniable that climate change is starting to hit home hard. Yes we the people have the ability to (and should) make a difference, but the lowest hanging fruit will be changes at the institutional level in the infrastructure sectors. The Labour Party , it’s certainly feeling like we need to start making tougher decisions or our way of life is increasingly going to come under threat.
