Congratulations Nathan. Recently, British Steel offered full-time jobs to 37 apprentices across our Scunthorpe, Teesside and Skinningrove sites. Among them was Nathan Faint who is now a mechanical technician at our #Teesside site. Speaking about his apprenticeship, Nathan said: “It was hard work, but it was incredibly rewarding by the end of it. The skills I have learned over the past three years, both in the classroom and on site, are now helping me every day at work.” Nathan has aspirations to further his knowledge, learning from those he works with at Teesside, but he also hopes to attain more qualifications to help further his career. He said: “I hope to complete a Higher National Certificate (HNC) in the near future, allowing me to progress even further as a British Steel employee.” We wish Nathan every success in his new job. #BuildingStrongerFutures

A big thank you to Appleby Frodingham Railway for putting on special Santa Express train rides around the works for British Steel staff and their families. Due to the popularity of last year’s event, this year the trips were held on 2 dates, the first being 7 December and the second 21 December. On both dates there was a morning and afternoon tour featuring none other than the man himself – Father Christmas! Everyone enjoyed the tours, with children receiving a gift from Father Christmas and hot drinks and refreshments also being provided. Donations were invited in support of the Appleby Frodingham Railway and a fantastic total of over £800 was raised to help fund the charity. Andrew Plumtree, Appleby Frodingham Railway Chairman said: "A huge thank you from myself and the charity. It was brilliant to be visited by so many British Steel staff and their family members, I want to thank them so much. We wish a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all!" It's the final day of our top 3 videos for 2024 and we can now reveal that our most popular LinkedIn video for 2024 was this one taken in September at our Continuous Casting plant 🥇. We look forward to bringing you even more insightful content in 2025! #BuildingStrongerFutures
Today we have another video from our #Scunthorpe Concast (Continuous Casting) plant. This shows the beginning of the process and we can see the crane lifting the ladle from BOS Plant and placing it on the Slab Caster ladle car. The ladle will hold 300 tonnes of molten steel so including the weight of the ladle the crane is lifting an impressive 450 tonnes. Once the ladle is in place on the ladle car, it moves on tracks into position over the tundish so the steel can be teemed – ladle to tundish to mould – and start its journey to becoming a solid steel product. To enable the continuous casting process, the introduction of a new ladle is a time critical procedure. From the removal of the empty ladle to the placement of a new one over the tundish the team only have around 7 minutes before the steel in the tundish runs out. Depending on the size of the steel being cast, it takes between 45-90 minutes for each ladle to empty. #BuildingStrongerFutures

CONGRATULATIONS! We’ve given full-time roles to 37 apprentices in Scunthorpe, Teesside, and Skinningrove, following the completion of their training. Our award-winning Zinoco offers excellent corrosion protection due to its durability, sacrificial protection and damage tolerance. The coating is applied in a 3 stage process, very similar to the process for applying any type of coating to a bare surface. First the rails undergo a degreasing process, this cleans the rail and ensures there are no contaminents present. Next the rail passes through a grit shot blasting machine. This creates a slightly rough surace to ensure maximum adhesion properties for the coating. Finally the rail is thermally sprayed with a zinc-rich alloy and the Zinoco process is then complete. The ends of each rail are usually left uncoated to facilitate installation welding. #BuildingStrongerFutures

We’re looking forward to 2025 when we will be supporting the UK Rail Research and Innovation Network (UKRRIN) Student Conference at the University of Sheffield. The student led event will be held on 7 and 8 January and in addition to exhibiting at the event our very own Dr Stephen Lewis CEng, Rail Technologies Manager, will be a keynote speaker and take part in the panel discussion. The conference has been designed to bring together early career researchers working at UKRRIN partner institutions, and beyond, to provide them with the opportunity to share their work with peers, and to build networks across academia and industry. Excitingly, this will also be one of the first academic events held during Rail200 - the 200th anniversary of the rail industry. #UKRRINSC2025 The University of Sheffield UK Rail Research and Innovation Network (UKRRIN)
