We’re proud to announce that we are the FIRST continuous biochar plant in the UK to operate without government funding or affiliation with a research project. Our venture was made possible through a green loan from HSBC (with a big thanks to our manager Tom Andrews), reflecting our commitment to sustainability and innovation. Since going online on September 6th, we’ve encountered a few minor challenges—mostly with low-tech aspects of the operation, such as wood chip bridging on the walking floor or wire snagging an auger. Despite these, we’ve achieved significant milestones: producing approximately 2.7 tonnes of dry-weight biochar per day and operating for getting on for 1,400 hours. While we have sold a few tonnes of biochar, much of it has been blended with compost made from wood brash and fines. This mix will be applied to our fields in the spring, once the ground is accessible. We’re thrilled with our progress and excited about what’s ahead. Our friends at Woodtek are set to bring their next C1000 online in just a couple of weeks—another significant step for the biochar community. A huge thank you to Stuart Jones, Darren Jones and the entire team for their hard work and dedication in making this project a reality. Exciting times indeed! #WoodtekEngineering #biochar #pyrolysis #regenerativefarming

Here’s another observation highlighting the beneficial properties of biochar. Attached are two additional photos taken the next day. The first image shows clear, clean water directly below the biochar pile, indicating effective filtration by the biochar. In contrast, the second image reveals less clear water pooling beneath the (clean) wood fines. Neither pool of water have been disturbed for over 24 hours. #biochar #environment #filtration

While we avoided snow yesterday, last night brought our first heavy frost of the season. The first photo shows our biochar pile, which appears largely unaffected by frost, while the second photo reveals a significant frost on our pile of wood fines. Could this comparison hint at why biochar might help extend the growing season for crops? Just a thought!

Combining biochar and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) reduces nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions, enhances nitrogen use efficiency, and boosts plant growth in maize systems. Biochar and AMF shift microbial communities, promoting sustainable agriculture by optimizing nitrogen cycling and mitigating greenhouse gas emissions. https://buff.ly/3Cuevbk #Biochar #Pyrolysis #CarbonCapture

Great video of our biochar being picked up. We have to empty this bay every third day or so and we are not running at full capacity yet.
Video from a visit to Brodie Biomass last week. When monitoring the system remotely and looking at the volume of feedstock and #biochar production on the screen in a dry weight calculation it is always nice to see how big a pile of 2.5-3tonne per day is. A great result from the Woodtek Engineering Ltd C1000 when ALL of the biochar is high-quality with a low HC ratio and I am looking forward to the EBC test results. Brodie Biomass has excelled as a plant operator, the whole setup up start to finish is smooth ensuring a high carbon capture #biochar #carboncapture #biomass #technology #innovation #smoothoperator

Here, we show our biochar being transported to our compost site, where it will be combined with our chipped and screened virgin wood fines and brash. We’re applying this enriched mixture to our fields, aiming to gradually reduce—and ultimately eliminate—the need for chemical fertilizers, fungicides, and pesticides. Good for the land and great for all life. #biochar #renewable #sustainable #soil #compost

Our C1000 Woodtek Engineering Ltd pyrolysis machine ‘Bibi’ is producing top quality biochar. 3 tonnes per day. We are adding 10% biochar to our compost taken from our wood fines and brash to make a biochar compost & great soil amendment. #carbonsequestration #biochar #compost #soil #green #renewableenergy

Although this post from the World Economic Forum is nearly a year old, it reinforces what industry experts have been advocating for years. However, substantiating these claims and gaining traction with a broader audience remains a challenge. A great read! #biochar #agriculture #cdr
Biochar is cheaper than other carbon removal methods — and it has a range of benefits beyond sequestering carbon.
