As the news from Nissan Motor Corporation caused concern in Sunderland, it was the turn of Hitachi Rail to give us a glimpse of positivity over the future of its own plant. The company's swift development of electric trains - including the chance to retrofit existing diesel models - opens up an exciting opportunity to broaden the conversation around securing the future of the Newton Aycliffe plant. Good to see Giuseppe Marino and Jim Brewin on site to lead the charge alongside Alan Strickland and Kim McGuinness

These are words no Sunderland worker wants to hear: "Nissan will restructure its business to become leaner and more resilient...." Nissan Motor Corporation CEO Makoto Uchida also says "turnaround measures do not imply that the company is shrinking", but 6,000 workers at the company's vast Sunderland site will be keen to hear details soon as their boss announces 9,000 job cuts around the world.
