Bracklinn Falls Footbridge was a winner at the IABSE Awards 2024! Out of an incredibly strong international shortlist, we were delighted to win the "Pedestrian and Cycle Bridge" category at the IABSE - International Association for Bridge and Structural Engineering awards this week. Another recognition for a superb team that managed to create a special structure. The work to repair the flood damaged Lower Sizergh Footbridge is now complete, and the National Trust has re-opened it to pedestrians. The bridge dates from the 1870s, and the main suspension chain was hit by flood debris in flooding in January 2024. Cake Engineering was responsible for the design and detailing of the temporary clamp system to enable the replacement of the damaged link. Working as specialist bridge engineers in collaboration with JBA Consulting we developed a neat clamp detail that enabled the main chain forces to be transferred simply and safely to the temporary system, the damaged bar to be removed and a new bar inserted and loaded in place. The construction team was Cheetham Hill Construction Limited, Abseil Commercial Ltd, and Total Steel Fabrication LLC. Photos from National Trust

A very enjoyable crowd at Bristol CivSoc (Civil Engineering Society) today to hear about fabrication at Cake Industries and the structural engineer's influence on making, given by David Knight.

The Featherstone Pavilion sits like a banyan tree on the terrace of the fifth floor Buro Happold London offices, as a place to meet and connect with others in the shade. Designed by Cake Engineering in collaboration with Justin Phillips of Buro Happold, the pavilion was fabricated and installed by Cake Industries. The tree-like form is an exercise in creating complex geometry from straight lines, referencing the curved shells of Candela and creating something that can be substantially reused at the end of its first life. Using straight, readily available douglas fir boards, the fins are set out on edge but inclined to gently touch a virtual toroidal form, creating a complex doubly curved soffit that evokes wings or spreading branches out from a central trunk. The pavilion roof is supported on a seating area and planter to provide a space to congregate. Lightweight structural forms ensure that the structural requirements of the existing building are respected, and the overall effect of a sculptural but functional space enlivens the exposed location. This elegant, lean construction is easy to construct and deconstruct, naturally weathers and requires minimal maintenance. Over time, climbing plants will provide partial natural shading in the summer, and the structure deliberately mirrors the design and symmetry of the internal timber staircase at the offices, also fabricated by Cake Industries.

Beaver Bridges Ltd were pleased to share with the residents of Rickmansworth, a sneak peek at what their new Aquadrome Active Travel bridge will look like. Three Rivers District Council appointed New Civil Engineer – Bridge Contractor of the Year, Beaver Bridges Ltd to deliver the full turnkey manufacture, construction and installation of the new deep red 48.6m x 3m Splayed Arch Active Travel Bridge to replace the existing bridge at Rickmansworth Aquadrome. Beaver Bridges will remove the old pedestrian bridge – at the Riverside Drive entrance to the 41-hectare Local Nature Reserve – with a new bridge that will be stronger and wider for families and cyclists to continue to access the much-loved space for generations to come. Cllr Chris Lloyd, Three Rivers District Council’s Lead Member for Leisure, said: “Replacing the old bridge forms a critical part of the wider and significant Rickmansworth Aquadrome Project that aims to restore, improve and safeguard this bio diverse nature reserve while balancing the site’s recreational use for many years to come. Planning permission has been granted for a new coastal hiking trail in County Mayo, Ireland, with design by Cake Engineering and BEAM Architects BRIDGE DESIGNERS. Stretching 15km from Céide Fields (a stone age settlement discovered under the peat layer) along the north Mayo coastline to Downpatrick Head, the trail forms part of the Wild Atlantic Way which will ultimately stretch all the way round the coast of Ireland. The stunning scenery and coastal geological features (sea stacks, arches, and blowholes) make this area of coastline an unspoilt wonder. We were delighted to support our client with route design and associated infrastructure along with the preliminary design of 11 new bridges needed along the way. The highlight of this is a 60m long suspension bridge crossing from headland to headland, anchored into the rock faces of the cliffs. We look forward to developing this route further and opening up this beautiful site to more visitors.
