CML is a multidisciplinary engineering company that uses Shape Memory Alloy to design and develop miniature actuators.

About us

Cambridge Mechatronics Limited (CML) is a multidisciplinary engineering company developing industry-leading precision motion solutions for use across a variety of markets, including smartphones, AR/VR, wearables and many more. We specialise in designing compact actuators that utilise shape memory alloy (SMA) materials. We are the only company in the world to master the precise control of SMA materials and we have developed and patented a variety of SMA-based actuators to control, move and position objects with exceptional accuracy. We protect our intellectual property, primarily via patenting our inventions, and licence our technology and IP to our manufacturing partners. Our SMA platform technologies comprise mechanical designs, electronics, control circuitry and software. That's why our team of engineers, technicians and scientists hail from a variety of different technical backgrounds, and many have degrees from world-class universities or considerable relevant experience in industry. CML actuators use SMA wires as single-piece motors that are thinner than human hair, and are able to reliably control their movement with sub-micron accuracy. Our SMA-based actuators can be used to provide auto-focus and optical image stabilisation in cameras, more accurate 3D-sensing, haptic devices, drug delivery devices and surgical instruments. CML has established a network of strategic relationships with the world’s leading technology manufacturers. Tens of millions of SMA products based on CML IP have shipped inside major brand-name devices

  • #FatThursday at Cambridge Mechatronics! 🍩 Today we’re enjoying the Polish tradition of Fat Thursday (Tłusty Czwartek in Polish) with a bunch of sweet pastries and doughnuts (not the fruit in the back). Fat Thursday historically marks the last chance to indulge before Lent, and we’re more than happy to take part in this tradition. A big thanks to Jakub Suchorowski for sorting out all the doughnuts.

  • Capturing smooth, stable video is a must for today’s smartphones, but not all camera systems are built the same. At Cambridge Mechatronics Ltd, we put Shape Memory Alloy (#SMA) technology to the test against Voice Coil Motor (#VCM) actuators in a real-world vibration challenge. In this video, Rory Buchanan walks us through the head-to-head comparison of flagship smartphones, including the #HONOR Magic6 Pro, #Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra, #iPhone 15 Pro Max, and #Xiaomi 14—all mounted on a moving scooter to see which technology delivers the best stability. The results speak for themselves. SMA outperforms VCM in every test, providing sharper, steadier footage in challenging conditions. • #5K #Followers on LinkedIn! 🥳 Thank you for being part of our journey. Thanks to all our customers, partners, colleagues, and industry peers for your support and engagement. All of us at Cambridge Mechatronics Ltd are proud to be leading the design and control of Shape Memory Alloy (#SMA) actuator technology, developing cutting-edge actuator solutions for #smartphone #cameras, #XR headsets, and #medical wearables. Your interest and interaction keep us motivated as we continue to push the boundaries of SMA innovation. What do you enjoy most about our content? Let us know in the comments.

  • #SMA vs. #VCM: Which smartphone camera handles vibrations best? We put flagship smartphone cameras through their paces in a real-world vibration test. Mounted on a moving scooter, the HONOR Magic 6 Pro (with SMA #AF and #OIS) took on the Samsung S24 Ultra, iPhone 15 Pro Max, and Xiaomi 14 (with VCM AF and OIS). The verdict? SMA technology provided unmatched stability and clarity, while the VCM-based systems struggled to keep up. With high force-to-mass ratio and exceptional hold force, the superior performance demonstrated in the external vibration tests highlights SMA’s potential to set new standards in smartphone camera technology. Check out this article & watch the video to see the test results for yourself! https://lnkd.in/ec44zah6

  • It’s been an exciting few days in San Francisco! CML’s CTO, Ben Brown, and Director of BD for HMD, Josh Carr have been at the #SPIE #PhotonicsWest #AR | #VR | #MR conference, meeting with industry leaders, clients, and innovators shaping the future of XR, VR, and AR. As the event wraps up today, we look forward to applying what we’ve learned and continuing to drive advancements in #SMA #actuator technology to enhance the user experience in next-gen headsets. We probably can’t help those funky-looking dogs though (sorry)!
