Charity week may be over but our charity work doesn't stop... Hi, I’m Jessie and I am a support worker at Chapter. As well as working for Chapter I volunteer at Noah’s Place two days a week. Noah’s Place is a care farm for adults with additional needs and helps teach life and social skills. This video shows me preparing a micro-veg order for a local restaurant that we sell to. I sow and grow these veg under the purple lights you see and then cut the veg when it’s ready to go. While I was doing this, most of the service users were inside doing crafts and baking as the weather was pretty miserable. There is also a tour around our shed – here we sell the crafts we make as well as any produce we have grown and the eggs from our chickens.

It’s no surprise that many of us struggle with the clock changes, but for those with ADHD it can be even more difficult. Changes in time and light can disrupt our circadian rhythms - the body’s internal clock which helps to regulate sleep and wake cycles. May people with ADHD already struggle with sleep conditions, from insomnia, fragmented sleep, reduced REM sleep to difficulty falling asleep and more frequent nighttime awakenings. When the rhythms that normally help keep those things at bay are changed, these already challenging things become exasperated. Whether you experience ADHD or not, you’ll be aware that sleepiness impacts your brain function and can make things like focusing and memory more difficult. When people with ADHD are sleepy from time changes, their symptoms may be heightened and in particular their working memory is decreased leading to forgetfulness and information retention issues. So how can we make this transition easier? The following are strategies from ADHD specialists to help navigate the time changes: Be patient: adjusting takes time so expect some irritability - especially with children - in the first few weeks. Exercise patience and understanding with yourself and others! Set a medication plan: if you take medication to manage your ADHD symptoms then talk with your doctor or healthcare provider about when to take them to help with this time change. Make a schedule: Create a schedule to help keep you in a routine for bedtime. Spend time outdoors: Sunlight can help stimulate dopamine releases but also is essential to regulate your body clock. Good sleep hygiene: a calming bedtime routine away from televisions, tablets and phones is recommended. Ultimately the time adjustments can be a challenge for everyone, but for those with ADHD or pre-existing sleep difficulties, it can be a particularly challenging time in the year. Using these tips above can help minimise the impact and ease adjustment to the new time schedule.

ADHD Awareness Month is the perfect time to challenge misconceptions about ADHD ❓ Question: Why does ADHD seem to run in families? 💡 Answer: ADHD has a strong genetic component. Partners with ADHD tend to carry a high load of ADHD-related genes from their parents, which increases the likelihood of passing it on to their children. Let’s break the stigma and encourage supportive conversations. #adhdawarenessmonth #ndbusinesssupport
