Clean Break is thrilled to announce the cast and creative team for the upcoming touring production of Scenes from Lost Mothers, which will be presented at educational and professional settings in February and March 2025. Scenes from Lost Mothers shines an important light on the experiences of real women navigating pregnancy, motherhood and separation from their babies while in prison. The play was co-commissioned by Clean Break and the University of Hertfordshire, and written by acclaimed playwright Gurpreet Kaur Bhatti using Dr Laura Abbott’s research project Lost Mothers, as well as contributions from Birth Companions' Lived Experience Team as inspiration. The cast includes Claire Bayley, Ro Florence, and Sabina Canon, who are all participating in our Acting Traineeship programme and bring valuable insights from their own lived experience of, or at being risk of, criminalisation. They will be directed by Anna Herrmann, Clean Break’s Artistic Director, with Neetu Singh as Assistant Director. The production will be touring educational and professional settings, helping to put these important stories centre stage. To learn more, see here: bit.ly/SFLMcast
Clean Break Theatre Company
Non-profit Organization Management
A women’s theatre company changing lives and changing minds – on stage, in prison and in the community.
About us
Clean Break is a women’s theatre company, founded in 1979 by two women prisoners who believed in the power of theatre to transform lives. Our vision is of a society where women can realise their full potential, free from criminalisation. We pursue this vision by producing ground-breaking theatre which puts women’s voices at its heart and creates lasting change by challenging injustice in and beyond the criminal justice system. Through theatre workshops and projects in prisons and the community which build confidence, resilience and wellbeing, we transform the lives of women who have experienced the criminal justice system or have been identified as at risk of entering it.

We are proud to have signed this letter alongside so many other organisations and individuals doing important work to end the criminalisation of survivors.
STOP PUNISHING SURVIVORS. PROVIDE SUPPORT. Domestic abuse survivors are being unfairly criminalised. Many women are in prison as a direct result of their abuse—coerced into offending, punished for acting in self-defence, or facing malicious allegations as part of a pattern of coercive control. Did you know that 3 in 5 women in prison have experienced domestic abuse, and that Black, Asian, minoritised, and migrant women face disproportionate harm within the system? Together with our partners Hibiscus Initiatives Advance Charity Agenda Alliance Centre for Women's Justice, we've sent an open letter co-signed by over 100 organisations, MPs, academics, and activists, calling on the UK government to: ✅ End the criminalisation of survivors of domestic abuse ✅ Support survivors, rather than punish them The time for action is now. Together, let’s ensure survivors receive support—not punishment. 📢 Read the full letter https://lnkd.in/ep8rW3ur and join us in calling for change. #StopPunishingSurvivors #DomesticAbuse #WomensJustice

From all of us at Clean Break, a huge thank you to everyone who donated to our Big Give #ChristmasChallenge, and shared our campaign videos. The funds raised over the past week will directly support our Members Programme, helping women who have experienced violence and criminalisation to find their creative voices, and rebuild their lives. The campaign ends at 12pm today, so there's still time to donate. As we've reached our target, donations made today won't be match funded, but they will still make a big difference to our Members: bit.ly/CBBG24

"It's a huge, brave, courageous step for someone to share what has happened to them." Clean Break's Support Manager Tracey Anderson explains the stark reality, that domestic violence is one of the most common shared experiences for women in our Membership. Help more women use the power of theatre to heal from experiences of violence. Donate to Clean Break before 12pm on Tuesday and your support will be doubled, in our Big Give #ChristmasChallenge: bit.ly/CBBG24 #16Days
