We help people and organisations tell a different climate story.

About us

At Climate Outreach, we help people and organisations tell a different climate story; from one of a lost cause to a story of people, progress and potential. With 20 years of research and insight, we know how to make climate stories as powerful and impactful as possible. We work with environmental groups, government and communities, helping them to understand their audiences and communicate powerfully with them. Armed with our insights, organisations and leaders can effectively engage and involve people at scale. (Climate Outreach is a UK registered charity established in 2004 which dedicates itself to helping people communicate climate change.)

  • At Climate Outreach, we understand the significance of doing thorough and considerate engagement with communities to inspire climate action. Our recent Britain Talks Climate research found that “very few people say they aren’t concerned at all about climate impacts”, and people feel particularly drawn to initiatives “taking place in local areas, closer to home and face-to-face”, where they are able to discuss both their concerns and ideas with real people. We spoke to the team at Barnet Council about their experiences building these crucial connections between local-level climate initiatives and communities. “They’re up for it. They’re worried about it, but they really don’t understand what they’re being asked to do. And that is the primary barrier." This from Emma Pinchbeck FEI hits the nail bang on the head. People across the UK are worried about climate change. They want to play their part in reducing emissions. But they don't know enough about what this means for their lives, workplaces and communities. The Government is cooking up a public participation strategy this year to help. It needs to be huge and exciting and ambitious and clear. Not easy - but absolutely doable and it would make such a huge difference. https://lnkd.in/e9iU2RY7

The carbon budget published by the Climate Change Committee is a roadmap to the future we want for our children. It charts a clear path: to cleaner air, cheaper, more secure energy and warmer homes.  And we know people back these policies: just last week polling showed 70% of people believe a government scheme to insulate our homes is the right priority for the country right now But we Climate Outreach and others also hear time and again that people don’t feel they know enough about what ambitious climate policies mean for their lives and communities. To change this, the Government must press ahead with an ambitious strategy to engage and inform everyone - as recommended by the Committee on Climate Change today. Climate Outreach and partners are helping shape what this strategy should look like - and we think there is a huge role for civil society in its roll out too.

The UK’s Seventh Carbon Budget level should be set at 535 MtCO2e, an 87% reduction against 1990 levels. It is in line with previous Government commitments – the Fourth, Fifth and Sixth Carbon Budgets, international commitments, and the Net Zero commitment in 2050. Electrification makes up 60% of emissions reductions by 2040. This includes decarbonising the grid and replacing fossil fuelled cars and heating systems with electric alternatives. This will require initial investment but we expect to start seeing savings in the Seventh Carbon Budget period. The net cost will be about 0.2% of GDP from now to 2050. This is less than we thought when we last gave advice in 2020. 65-90% of this will be paid by the private sector. But we will need targeted public investment too. It’s important that policymakers ensure this money goes in the right place - to unlock private investment. This country has a prosperous and secure future ahead. The fossil fuel age is over – it’s time to electrify the United Kingdom. https://lnkd.in/e8ktArw6

  • Today the Climate Change Committee published their advice to the UK government on how to continue reducing our emissions. What this seventh carbon budget report provides is a roadmap to the future we want for our children. We asked the UK public for their opinion on different forms of energy sources. When it comes to costs, 42% of the public think renewable energy sources such as solar and wind are cheaper than coal, oil and gas (20%). Renewables also remain more popular with the public (48%) than coal, oil and gas (23%) and majority of the public believe renewables are better for the country's energy security (57%).

  • So much can happen in just 13 years!  ⚽ Man City who now dominate the Premier League had only just won their first title in over 40 years. 📷 Instagram was just a couple of years old, and nobody had ever heard of TikTok. ⚡ Coal has dropped from nearly 40% of the UK electricity mix to nearly zero. Why are we thinking about things that happened 13 years ago? Because tomorrow the Climate Change Committee will publish the seventh carbon budget, charting the path for our emissions reduction for 2038-2042 - 13 years time. So we are reflecting on just how much has changed in just over a decade, and just how much progress we have made in reducing emissions to date. https://lnkd.in/dnUkvDYV

  • Big climate week coming up in the UK: on Wednesday 26 February the government’s climate advisors, the Climate Change Committee, will publish their advice on the UK's seventh carbon budget (CB7). What exactly is CB7? It will set the government’s target for emissions reductions for the period 2038 to 2042 - which may feel far in the future but is just 13 years away. Watch this space - we’ll be sharing our reaction to the report, alongside sharing stories of how much good stuff has happened in the last 13 years to help show we can make the necessary progress over the next 13 years.
